Always, Sam is worrying that he cares too much. Always, Sam knows that he cares too much. But he doesn’t know how to treat Mister Frodo how he would treat any other master he wasn’t in love with because he has no other master and he simply is in love with Frodo. So, he is stuck forever-wondering if his seams show. If there is straw poking out. If the crows fear him, or are only pretending. “My dear Sam,” Frodo sighs, thumbing back and forth over the hewn pattern in his mug. It is a large earthenware alehorn Thorin made, and there are dwarfish runes carved into the sides. Sam has loved this mug since he was a child, and would trace the shapes with the tip of his fingers, wondering what mysterious things the runes held inside, what they meant. If they were love poems to Bilbo, which he chose to believe, at first because it felt scandalous, and later, because it gave him hope. If he has the option to choose the mug he brews tea for Frodo in, he still chooses this one. “You take such very good care of me,” Frodo murmurs.
“Well, yes, sir,” Sam says, blushing. It is my job.”

Two days ago, Hikaru won against Magnus Carlsen in the final game of the Blitz World Championship, taking the title from him for the first time in many, many years.
When Magnus comes to him, all ruffled feathers and quiet resentment, Hikaru thinks that this is his chance to get his revenge. He thinks that he would finally be able to bring the great Magnus Carlsen to his knees.
Hours later, with Magnus’s crinkled eyes and bright laughter beside him, Hikaru is disillusioned. It isn't revenge he wants, and what happened a few hours prior wasn't revenge.
He has chased after Magnus Carlsen for decades, and the fluffy-haired man has, at last, slowed down for him.
Hikaru is disillusioned, and he thinks that perhaps Magnus is, too.

The Winter Soldier thrashed, drowning. It was taking forever. His mask seemed to be stuck. He pulled on it, struggling to draw breath, sinking and resurfacing, clawing at his face, the panic in his eyes terrible.
Steve's would-be killer. The very worst HYDRA had ever conjured. A symbol of death and everything he stood against. And Steve just couldn't bear it. He was ready to go, but this guy clearly wasn't.

The premise: the Winter Soldier's mask doesn't come off quite as easily. Meaning, Steve never saw Bucky's face, and he didn't hold back during the fight on the Helicarrier. This is where the story picks up and is no longer canon-compliant. Though, I've stolen some ideas from the sequels and deliberately contradicted some future plot points/established canon.COMPLETED

Steve relaxes back against his chair. He takes a quick look – just checking, just making sure – over his shoulder, and he gets an unexpected and vaguely life-changing glimpse of Tony’s ass, as he bends over the pool table to line up his shot.
When he looks back, Bucky’s staring over Steve’s shoulder, a familiar, dumb, dreamy look on his face. Steve feels something catch in his chest.
“Oh,” he says. He clears his throat. God, he’s an idiot. He is an idiot. “Him, huh?”
“Yeah,” Bucky says. He catches the corner of his mouth with his teeth, but it’s not enough to fight off the stupid grin lighting up his whole damn face. “That’s the one,” he says, low and fond.

For someone he'd hero-worshipped for so long, Steve Rogers in the flesh is a pretty big disappointment. For one thing, he keeps looking at Tony as though he reminds him of someone else, and even if he never says anything, Tony's pretty sure it's his father. A lifetime of not measuring up to Howard's expectations is more than enough, thank you very much, and he's certainly not going to make an effort to live up to any of Steve's. Steve's pretty clearly failed to live up to his expectations, in any case, and that's not hypocritical at all.
