Summary
This is the story of a woman named Mariella.
Mariella woke up on a day just like any other, except today would not be a day like any other, for today, on her way to work, she would see the body of an insane man on the sidewalk. She would go to call for an ambulance, remember the important meeting that would decide her life forever and run as fast as she could to her job to avoid being late. Like clockwork, the next time she would have a strangely-timed, oddly important meeting, she would see the same man again, screaming the exact same thing. It didn't bother her- she knew what he was saying, about 'waking up', was purely a delusion.
She knew what was real and what was not.
Or, at least, she believed she did.
One day, after speaking with her boss and discovering an important meeting scheduled for the following morning, she decided to leave a little earlier than normal. Perhaps on her way there, she could meet the man again. Perhaps she could help him. Perhaps she could stop this one from dying.
I am sane. I am in control of my mind. I know what is real, and what isn't.

Y/n’s gaze drifted briefly toward the cracked stone, then back to the Merman’s face, unimpressed.
Most humans would have been terrified by now. Instead, the Prince reached toward his wrist, taking off the bracelet and gently handing it out to the beautiful creature in front of him. You left this, he signed, and the Merman froze.
Y/n’s expression softened. I wanted to thank you.

Leo nodded his head without taking his eyes off the tempting jug of cold salvation in Kaiman's hand.
"And yet you still choose to refrain from taking a life?" he next asked.
*Beep*
Leo nodded his head again.
After that, Kaiman gave him a devious grin and had the nerve to tip the jug up to his own mouth to take a big swig right in front of him, before setting it down on the floor directly outside the glass wall between them.
“You would have earned your water today if you had obeyed my command. Let this be a lesson for you.”
