Ilya's heart breaks at his plead. No matter how much it hurt when Shane left or when Ilya saw him with Rose, seeing Shane like this, tears in his eyes, voice cracking, none of it seems to matter.
"Yes, you can." Ilya's words are steady and sure. He slides one of his hands down to Shane's chest, pressing his palm to his sternum. "Focus on me."
Or: Shane has a couple of panic attacks (tuna melt and Montreal club) and Ilya helps him through them.

Shane snapped around “If what? What the fuck did you say?” His voice was wild now, no attempt to conceal his fear or his breaking heart.
The bewildered other player just said “I just saw the news report, coach had it up on his phone, said someone died in the crash…” he said more but Shane's brain had stopped processing anymore information beyond the fact someone had died.
In fact it wasn't just his brain that had stopped, his limbs went numb, he sucked in a sharp breath and his heart was trying to claw it’s way out of his chest. Ilya might actually be dead; this wasn’t just Shane being Shane this was real. Way to fucking real. He was vaguely aware of the feeling of the cold ice against the side of his head. Shane had dropped down onto the ice. He hadn't passed out, he hadn't tripped, he's body simply gave out from the shock.

Ilya wasn’t sure when it all started.
He just knew that one morning, when the sky was still dark and scary, lying next to his boyfriend, that something was off. His breath hitched, eyes darting across all corners of the room, the way his fingers tingled. His mind was racing—and in first place, at that—but not even close to crossing the finish line.
Ilya’s brain felt soft. Mushy. Fuzzy. What’s the word, TV static? Yeah, like that.
He couldn’t understand what he was thinking, or even why he was feeling this way. He cocked his head in Shane’s direction, watching him carefully sprawled across the bed. His boyfriend’s arm was draped off the bed, fingers slightly curled. Ilya’s eyes moved up to his face---his eyes shut, his face slack with sleep, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. Ilya realized that he was forgetting to breathe and sucked a sizeable amount of oxygen in. But when it came out, it was staggered, fast, and suffocating.

The touch is gentle and the cream is soothing but that doesn't stop the soft yelp that escapes Shane's lips at the touch. It isn't dissimilar to any other bruise he's gotten in his life, especially playing such a high velocity, full contact sport for a living. Ilya Rosanov didn’t belong in the hospital. He didn’t belong face down on the ice covered in blood.
He belonged with Shane, in their home, with their dog; breathing and upright and without brain damage from taking the blade of a professional hockey player to the sensitive veins in his forehead. Shane had been to enough trainings to know that getting rattled against the board during a game was a whole other ballgame in comparison to getting a blade to his head.
Even with the helmet, there had still been so much blood - Shane couldn’t wrap his mind around it.
