А у повітрі стійкий сморід гноїння змішався із подихом самої Смерті. Вона тут щаслива, бродить поміж густої трави та пророслих скрізь очі його родичів квітів, пестить пальцями шапочки грибів що випинають свої голови з їхніх роззявлених в агонії ротів. Вона мліє від радості свого банкету, запашна цариця Творіння, мовчазна господиня Нового життя.
— В мене більше немає дому, — каже Обі обіймаючи себе і Смерть сміється разом із припливом.

Від усього цього тепла й вологості, поки язик знову й знову проходиться по ньому, ніби наново вивчаючи кожну його частину, все тіло Спамтона в його руках стає жахливо розслабленим. Він обм’якає, майже не ворушиться, й якийсь час кімнату наповнюють лише вологі звуки, стогони, приглушені схлипи й тихе ричання Тенни. Він легко вкладає чоловічка собі на долоню, зовсім не обтяжуючись тим, щоб торкатись себе: якщо він справді збирається зробити те, що збирається зробити, Спамтон має бути добре змащеним, а уся його увага має належати лишень його крихітному діловому партнеру. Тенна голодно, ласо вилизує хутро, його язик проходиться чужим тільцем повільно, слини так багато, що в ній можна було б втопитись. І Спамтонові, вочевидь, подобалося все це.

На очі чоловіка налились безглузді й сповнені відчаю сльози. Він витер їх рукою й та вкрилася вологим слизом, що блискотів зеленим у темряві. Його знудило, криваві бризки бруднили собою стіну печери за яку він тримався мов за рятівний круг.
Тепер тоненька кривава нитка тяглась з рота вздовж підборіддя, мляво повзучи з глибин його побитого тіла. Ніколи ще Джек не відчував себе таким старим й настільки нечемно близьким до смерті; він чув як кров крапала у воду під ним але ледве розумів це, силуючи себе лише для того щоб переставляти власні ноги з місця на місце. Все тіло нило, а сам він начебто вчився ходити наново, роблячи крок за кроком майже що навпомацки — чорнота заливала хвилями очі й він слабко розумів яким чином досі тримається при свідомості.
Чоловік напівмертвою ходою брід вздовж крижаного язику річки вглиб глотки цієї печери, намагаючись впевнити себе що тихе гудіння дронів яке він чув за власною спиною — лише обман слуху. Й, судячи з того що він досі був живим, поки що так воно і було.
