After graduating with a degree in psychology, Lucy is having trouble finding a clinic that will hire a woman in the 1960's. Down on her luck and in need of a job, she gets an offer through a friend of a friend to be a caretaker of a massive castle and estate in the north coast of Germany. the pay is good, and she'll get to live in the castle as she works. Her new employer, the mysterious Schroeder Felton, keeps an odd schedule. She barely sees him during the day, and when she sees him at night, playing away on the keys of a forte piano, he never eats. She's immediately fascinated by him. At first he's cold and distant, but as they get closer she starts to see a lighter, more gentle side of him. But there is something he's hiding from her, and she will get to the bottom of it.

A voice called out to her, and she called back, saying that she needed five more seconds.
From the way she held her stance to the slight puff in her cheeks as she furrowed her brows, it was all too familiar. Eventually, she picked out a plain sugar cookie with a pink bow made of frosting. The cookie was as simple as it sounds.
As she turned around, that girl couldn’t stop reminding Schroeder of someone. Just as she left the shop, he glanced at her blue eyes with the same expression he had seen years prior.
No.
Oh no.
It can’t be.
His heart dropped as he realized who he had just seen.
He gave one more glance at Lucy van Pelt’s daughter as the door shut behind her. It closed with a soft thud and a ring.

Summary
Lucy Van Pelt spent eleven years convinced she and Schroeder were meant to be. He spent those years wishing she’d leave him alone. Junior year of high school, she finally did. She apologized, toasted to change, and walked away.
Now they’re sophomores in college. Schroeder’s at Roselyn Conservatory, but he can’t connect with the music anymore. His playing is technically perfect but emotionally dead. It's been taking its toll on him. When his mom threatens to pull him out unless he starts “actually living his life,” and Lucy needs to make her ex jealous, fake dating seems like the perfect solution.
Except Schroeder’s never dated anyone. And he can’t stop noticing things about Lucy he swears he never paid attention to before. The way she laughs. How his chest stops hurting when she’s around. The fact that the music only comes back when he’s thinking about her. He tells himself it’s not feelings. But he’s running out of ways to lie to himself about what that means.
