Summary

Summary
Daniel is ready to die. He’s been ready. Margret and Phillip Buckley, however, are not willing to stop the battle against Daniel’s cancer. “Eddie,” he says, thrusting a hand to him, and Buck reaches over without a second thought. His whole palm feels electric, it smarts and carries the touch of Eddie, Eddie, that Buck feels it completely. He has no idea what’s happening to him. “Edmundo Diaz, but just Eddie though, uh, no one calls me Edmundo. Right. I’m a new nurse here, at Cedars-Senai. Oh –”

There’s a nudge at his hand, a careful tap that finally makes him look up for the first time since they got there. Evan wipes his face hastily, trying to sniffle up the water in his eyes before anyone can see. He doesn’t want to cry, but sometimes he just can’t help it.
Because that’s his brother. That’s his big brother, in a hospital bed, with dark smudges under his eyes and a really bad cough that keeps getting worse, but he’s smiling at Evan like it’s all going to be okay.
All Evan heard was the machine. He counted the sounds, hoarded them, and wished he could just sit there and listen to the proof of his brother’s heart beating forever.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep –

Daniel needed more. More surgeries, more transfusions, more time. Evan couldn't give that to him, but maybe, years later, thanks to Eddie and Christopher and Bobby, he'll realize. He was always enough for Daniel.
