Summary
This essay is an in-depth reading and interpretation of the Heated Rivalry 2014 MLH Awards bathroom scene. I examine the different emotions Shane and Ilya go through in this scene, where the emotions derive from, how they are expressed or concealed, and why those emotions change throughout the scene. I make the case for my interpretation in which Shane and Ilya are actually both, in different ways, exhibiting self-destructive or self-sabotaging behaviours in this scene. I explain why Ilya steered the conversation towards sex, and why Shane willingly followed, despite his earlier anger. I also explore the theme of the desire to know and be known by someone, and the theme of acceptance.
(I tell you what I think Shane and Ilya were really thinking in that damn bathroom and why.)
