“I have a boyfriend.” He finally says, his throat feeling dry as he swallows. He watches as the blonde haired man looks at him for a moment before shrugging and pulling back. For a second, he swears he hears Ilya mumble, “you didn’t say no.” Under his breath and flushes.
“Your choice, Hollander. If you ever want to know, I will be here.”

Not when he feels the weight of the silver— yes, silver, not gold— medal on his neck, weighing him down like it’s a thousand tons heavy. It feels like more of a burden than an achievement. ‘You were here to win gold. Gold. Not silver. Everyone must be disappointed. Hockey's golden boy and you couldn’t even win a gold medal at the Olympics. So much for that.’— his brain traitorously supplies as he plasters a smile on his face that he’s sure looks more like a grimace as he waves at the crowd, his fingers feeling numb as his nerves tingle in the most overwhelming and overstimulating way ever.

“Er, hello, I am, ah, Ilya.” He manages to say, letting a grin form on his lips when he realizes he didn’t mess up his words and say something wrong. He looks at the other boy, waiting for him to say something until a second passes. The smile on his lips slowly fades as he tilts his head, a deep pit forming in his stomach. “Это было плохое решение. Мне не следовало с ним разговаривать. Он, наверное, услышал от других детей, что я плохо говорю по-английски.”— his brain uselessly supplies.
He almost tries to run away before the boy pulls a piece of paper from the pocket of his shorts. He scribbles something on the paper before shakily getting up and giving it to him.
‘Hi, I’m Shane.’ The paper reads, Ilya blinks, he wonders why the boy— Shane— won’t speak but he isn’t going to ask him about it. Maybe he just doesn’t like speaking. He can’t blame him. Instead, he nods his head, hands the paper back and smiles at him, “Shane. That is nice name. Very Canadian.” He jokes and Shane sheepishly nods his head, a small smile curling on his lips.
OR
After moving to Canada, Ilya struggles to learn and speak English. He becomes friends with Shane Hollander who does not speak at all.

Of course Ilya wasn't going to choose him.
And now, he stood in their kitchen like a stranger, having to pretend be okay with the fact that Ilya went out and hooked up with Svetlana on a night meant to celebrate hockey's greatest. A party he wasn't even invited to as a captain himself.
What a fucking joke.
He spent the entire day coming up with meticulous loopholes and justifications for something that was actually quite simple—nobody remembered. Shane was wholeheartedly forgotten and he was too proud, or maybe dense, to figure it out himself.
Or, the one where Ilya forgets Shane’s birthday. Coping ensues.
