Strange things are happening in L'manberg. Monsters from a fiery hell dimension are slipping through unstable portals, villains are getting sponsorships from big corporations, and Schlatt somehow has control over the most powerful hero in the city. Schlatt would be content to let Las Nevadas run around doing whatever, but they've gone from being cartoon villains to stealing some actually valuable stuff. It sure is a good thing that nothing can permanently breach the Nether, right? Right?
In other news, Techno's farm is overrun by magic plants (and it is his one mission in life to convince everyone he meets to help him fix it), Tommy keeps using his salary up to buy protein powder, and Wilbur & Phil realize they have no life outside of work because they're too weird.

“You’re the one who—! Oh, whatever.” Phil shook his head and brought his last candle over to Techno, kicking him in the shin with a smirk. “Ready?”

Three weeks into their shared Minecraft world, Derek builds Avery a library.
It has a pitched roof and reading nooks and lanterns placed at exactly the right height and a sign above the fireplace that says for Avery, so we have somewhere to put things we want to keep.Avery tries to tell Derek it's beautiful. Derek says it's just a Minecraft building. Avery says it's beautiful again. Derek says the farm was already finished so he had time. Avery says it's beautiful a third time and waits.
Derek says thank you. It comes out right this time.Later Avery falls asleep against Derek's chest on the couch and Derek pulls the redistributed blanket over both of them and thinks about the sign and decides that this, the lamp, the apartment, the ordinary Thursday night weight of someone he loves asleep against him, is also something he wants to keep.

The last thing D3rLord3 ever said to AveryTheMayo in that world was a question. A distraction. A way to push him somewhere safe before the door closed.
Derek Hutchins wakes up at 3am and cannot convince himself he is real. He presses his hand to his own chest and counts his heartbeat and it doesn't help, and then Avery is there, sitting on the kitchen floor, asking him about chip flavors like it's the most natural thing in the world.
It helps. Avery helps. Derek is slowly, reluctantly, gratefully learning to let him.The next morning Derek tries to make breakfast and sets off the smoke alarm. The eggs are perfect. The toast is a casualty. Everything is fine.

Derek had been lying flat on his back with his face to the ceiling, but now he rolled onto his side, curled like a comma, to face Avery. He usually wore glasses, but those were conspicuously absent, and even on the reg they did nothing to soften the terse angles of Derek’s face, the truncated line from his nose to his top lip, the shadows so deep they bruised his eyes. Like this, in real life, Avery could see Derek looking at him, and see himself being seen in a way that transcended human knowledge.
“Only awkward if we make it awkward,” he said.
