This story started as a series of drabbles, ficlets, and could-have-been-canon scenes beginning in June of 1995 wherein Fred and Hermione slowly become more than friendly acquaintances. Similarly, this fic itself has gradually morphed into much more than that, and certainly more than I had ever intended it to be.
It’s now 250k+ words of my explaining by example all of the ways that these two could - SHOULD - have been canon, and what that might have looked like if it ran alongside the events of the original books (or most of them, anyway).
That said, this story is significantly darker than canon, and it touches on some of the trauma that was previously brushed over, as well as injecting some where it makes sense to have occurred. There’s plenty of humor and joy, but there’s also a lot of pain that, within the context of the story, has good reason to be felt.
Regarding the Underage tag, the characters are ages sixteen and eighteen at the first occurrence. If this upsets your sensibilities, this is not the story for you. Especially triggering content will be called out in chapter notes.

Training knives, different from the real ones Clary carried with her everywhere. Her mother had trained her to defend herself, and insisted she keep the training up and sparred with her daughter six out of seven nights a week.
So was it any wonder that on night number seven, Clary took any opportunity to escape that she could?
In which Clary has a slightly different but still non-shadowhunter upbringing, a very dedicated street art career, and meets Alec as her first introduction to the shadow world a few months before her inheritance.

At this rate, it wouldn't be long before she couldn't stand him at all.
All his ideas about asking Magnus to undo the spell evaporated into nothing. It was better this way. It was better if he knew what they were thinking, so he could get better. So he could at least be tolerable enough to be kept around.

Jace’s blow had been just as he had described. It was ironic. Poetic. Jace staggered back. He wished to reach for him. He wanted someone to hold him now, that he couldn’t keep himself standing. He felt his legs give in, didn’t know where he was falling to until his back hit water. His mind was becoming fuzzy. Thoughts wouldn’t materialize entirely, instead there was only a constant feeling, glimmers of memories, fear, resentment, jealousy.
