Aventurine’s head whipped back into place to face Ratio. Those words couldn’t be real. Not coming out of Ratio’s mouth, and not directed towards Aventurine. He needed confirmation. He needed confirmation that this was real, he wasn’t dreaming, he wasn’t insane, he was here, he was real and that actually happened. Because not even in his wildest dreams would something as impossible as this occur. Desperately, Aventurine seized Ratio’s arms which were loosening around him as he looked to him for validation.
Aventurine stared at him in horror.
Ratio was passed out.

“You okay?” Aventurine asked gently, his voice laced with worry. He continued to rub soothing circles on Ratio’s back, feeling the subtle tremors still running through his mate’s body.
Ratio nodded, but his face was still pale, and he looked dazed. “I… I think the food we had for dinner must’ve been expired,” he mumbled, his voice sounding weak.
Aventurine’s brow furrowed, a skeptical smile tugging at his lips. “Honey, I ate the same thing, and I’m fine. Besides, if it were food poisoning, it would’ve hit you a lot sooner than now.”
Ratio winced, conceding the point with a tired nod. “Mmm… you’re probably right. Maybe it’s just a stomach bug.”
Aventurine chuckled softly, an idea dawning on him that he almost didn’t dare to hope for. Could it be that simple? The thought made him feel giddy, and he found himself studying Ratio with a new intensity, his gaze roaming over his mate’s features as he considered the possibility.

In his sokutai, yes, resplendent in silks embellished with the newly founded Gojo clan’s crest, the last thing Nanami had seen before leaving Heian-kyo for a simpler life. In the light armor some shamans favored, too, worn more for form and style, to mark him as being on their side, spattered with blood that was not his own. In clothes tattered into shreds as he appeared in the midst of Nanami’s home, a wildly triumphant grin on his face and a prize in hand, too; and after that, clad in the hitatare they donned in an attempt at disguise.
