I’m Vex Mercer, twenty-one, third-year Gale City University problem child, and somehow I’ve ended up with a very serious crush on my project partner.
Her name’s Fiona Walsh. She’s quiet, brilliant, painfully polite, and exactly the sort of girl who should know better than to waste her time on me. We got shoved together for an end-of-year project, I treated it like a joke, she ended up doing most of the work, and we were barely on speaking terms for months.

After that I can’t look at her normally. So basically: I was supposed to coast through uni smoking, swearing, and doing the bare minimum. Instead I’m stuck in a group project, in emotional danger, and one soft-spoken math girl away from a complete psychological collapse.
