Hubert let his hands fall to his side too, out of Ferdinand’s mane, and mourned the loss of his warmth that stoked the fire in his chest. He was halfway to reaching out, to assuring Ferdinand that the contact was very much so reciprocal and it was due to Hubert’s negligence in his studies that led to what must have been an unpleasant kiss for Ferdinand, when Ferdinand continued to speak. "I think they have left now, but we should still be cautious."
Hubert felt his heart sink at the realisation.
Ferdinand did not love him.
He had spotted the vile creatures they were searching for and in an area with little cover, devised a plan to secure both of their lives.
Hubert would be impressed if he were not so thoroughly trounced by his mortification.
