“Will you tell me about what it is that haunts you?” Thomas asks, as forward as ever when shepherding James through his own recalcitrance. There’s no surprise in this, considering that the only things that James has not yet shared are the parts of his history that spook him from the darkness within which he keeps them.
The parts that cannot be spoken without also speaking of John Silver.
More ghost than man; a shadow that breathes alongside him and tethers part of him to the darkness. To expose him now, even to Thomas, may at last serve to banish that ghost to somewhere James cannot follow. Somewhere he’s desired to leave Silver since the moment everything ended, but cannot. Will not. The echo of him is as perplexing and infuriating as the man himself.
And damn it all, James misses him.

It’s remarkable, James muses, how alike gathering his thoughts in this moment is to finessing his crew back from mutiny. Anticipation knots his shoulders. Control of the situation dances neatly from his grasp, each deed he wishes to confess keeping its distance but watching him with hungry, demanding eyes.
It’s challenging to determine which confessions to watch back; which will turn on him and become the noose with which he hangs. Which ones would put the lever in Thomas’ hands. Which may then convince him to pull it.
Thomas had been willing to pardon pirates, all those years ago. Would he pardon a monster, surrendered at his feet?

To say that Big wakes up would be a strong overstatement of what happens. He’s mostly dead, and then he’s slightly less dead and can open his eyes sometimes, and then he’s only half-dead.
The few weeks he’s half-dead would probably be the worst, if Big had any recollection of them after he gets out of the hospital. He knows that he asks over and over where Ken is, and every time the staff tell him, and every time a little piece of him dies.
And then he goes back to sleep, and like a goldfish he forgets and they do it all again. It happens so many times it sticks with him even though practically nothing else from half-dead does.
And then suddenly, he’s not half-dead. He’s mostly alive. His brain gets its shit together and he can operate his arms and legs, and speak, if a little slurringly. He regains episodic memory and is profoundly embarrassed that he’s been told upwards of thirty times that Ken is dead. In all that, he never asked after Khun Kinn.
