Dani smiled as her heart grew impossibly full. The rose and the helicopter and the fancy dinner all of that was absolutely wonderful. She couldn’t imagine someone making her feel so special but this was what she’d always wanted from him–just him. All she’d wanted from the beginning were those little bits that made up the person who tackled her in the middle of the precinct on the very first day they met. The person who’d let her–a relative stranger–comfort him.

Dani looked at him. She’d seen so many expressions filter through her partner’s face–a face that had become as familiar to her as her own. That mask he wore, pristine polish coupled with flamboyant overconfidence she saw through it. She always did and what she saw underneath always remained. Pain. The helplessness began to overwhelm him. Malcolm remembered what it felt like to be helpless, he remembered Gil telling him his ex-girlfriend was dead. What she’d shared with Malcolm earlier had been hard, voicing those feelings had been hard but looking at her loves together like this, she knew she needed nothing else. She’d thought she paid a price for having everything but she knew now that wasn’t true. Her loves were hers. Dani was Zahra’s mom and Malcolm’s wife. She didn’t have to be anything else for anyone else.

Summary
Malcolm remembered telling Dani the other day that grace was undeserved forgiveness. It was something that you couldn't earn. He’d been talking about Outer Dark but Malcolm realized just then that he’d been talking about himself as well. Malcolm didn’t deserve Dani’s grace nor could he earn it. It was given to him simply because she allowed it.
