Summary
Opening the door, Bradley went slow and stepped away when he felt something pushing against the base. The porch light spilled over the body sprawled across his threshold. Surprise kept him still for a moment until recognition made him move.
“Hangman. Jake. What the fuck?” Bradley asked, thumping down to one knee as he helped Jake up from where he’d fallen when the door didn’t stabilize him anymore.
There was blood. Swelling covered his face and hands that would bruise sooner rather than later. His torn khakis were covered in dirt and smelled like rotten trash. Half of his ribbons had been ripped off. None of the blood or smears of whatever Bradley didn’t want to know about had dried, so the fight couldn’t have happened too long before.

“Dude, is that Rooster?” Javy exclaims, leaning closer to Jake’s ear.
The name startles Jake so severely his drink almost slips through his fingers. Tightening his grip, Jake whips his head forwards, his pulse thudding in his throat as he searches downwards through the sea of writhing bodies.
On instinct Jake wants to say no, to laugh the question off because of course it can’t be, but once Javy points to help him, Jake’s mouth parts in pure disbelief.
It is Rooster, clear as day.
Jake can’t tear his eyes away if he tries.

Summary
Jake never thinks about Bradley as the one that got away.
That implies that something happened, something beyond control and beyond reason and beyond their best efforts, and it just didn’t work out.
But Bradley left. So he didn’t get away. He pulled Jake’s heart out of his chest and crushed it on the tarmac after their TOPGUN graduation, and drove away like Jake wasn’t in the rearview.
That’s all they had. Eight weeks, something like ten years ago, that was it. And they spent more of it bickering than they did doing anything else, besides finding secluded corners and supply closets that locked to steal ten minutes alone in. They fought and argued and competed, and spent every moment they could together in-between. Eight weeks.
It took less than half of that for Jake to be more than half in love.

Jake sees a flash of movement out of the corner of his eye. There’s a creature watching them from the waves.
It’s a seal, he quickly realizes. Big and bulky, fully adult. Coarse brown fur, huge black eyes, slick pelt. The seal is staring directly at Jake, something baleful and almost challenging in its manner. Now that he thinks about it, he’s certain he’s seen this same seal patrolling the waters around the island or sunbathing lazily on the black rocks.
It has a distinctive, recognizable whisker pattern: prominent and bushy, like a particularly bad mustache.
