At that time, Light couldn’t understand that definition of love – that depth of emotion directed all towards one person. He could barely muster up feelings of fondness towards his own family, after all, so that kind of love, that kind of weakness, didn’t seem attainable to monsters like him or L.
The lingering taste of iron in his mouth, the bitterness of defeat and of the game ending pulled him to the present, and Light wondered if L had beat him yet again in this regard.

Summary
An alternate take on what Light could have done leading up to his solitary confinement and the effects of that change on canon events.
Light sets himself up to look like he's having a nervous breakdown and erases his memories before turning himself in as opposed to after. The memory wipe also has a few side effects due to how much Light's life and thoughts revolved around the death note. Also I added some stuff I made up for fun and drama.
May end up including some lawlight because I truly cannot help myself, but that will not be tagged unless/until it appears.

At first Frodo was perplexed, for the visitor rode not a pony but a horse, which were seldom seen in the Shire. Then he took in the blue pointed hat and the long grey beard, and leapt to his feet in excitement, book forgotten. Sam, who had come to stand at his side, whispered, “Is that really him? Just like Bilbo’s stories?”Frodo and Sam’s first year together in the Shire, from spring to winter and back again.
