The crew of the Hephaestus struggle to adjust to life back on Earth. Lovelace is bored and Minkowski thought things would be different. Doug doesn’t remember the life he was supposed to go back to, and Jacobi’s doing fine, by the way. Just great. At least no-one’s trying to kill them, and the walls haven’t creaked ominously in a while, which is an improvement, right? At least Hera has a body now. And it’s pretty dang cool.

Summary
After Wolf 359's strange change in behavior and the brief alien contact, Lovelace finds herself trapped in a hopeless situation: the Hephaestus has undergone severe damage, her shuttle has become lost in space with Eiffel on board, and the rest of the crew now has even more reason to distrust her. But even in the face of insurmountable obstacles and the prospect of never seeing home again, she manages to find strength and comfort from an unexpected source, and so maybe there is a glimmer of hope for her amidst the landscape of a dying space station.

lovelace helps minkowski cut her hair. she always has, and the buzz of the clippers in her hand is… something. nice. something she had control over, even back on the hephaestus, when she didn’t have control over anything else. it was harder when they were in space, because the shards of shorn hair would float around the station’s bathroom, getting in her eyes and mouth. now they just float to the linoleum tile in the shitty apartment they’re renting.
