Foreshadowing, Wendy Clarke thought to herself as she looked out across the Méga Marché’s car park, was one of the great lies of fiction. The shelves of her mobile bookshop were full of works in which a reader might reasonably expect to find some form of warning before catastrophe struck the protagonist.
Wendy had received no such sign. There was no prophetic dream, no ominous headline in that morning’s newspaper, no foreboding pile of feathers littering the ground where she’d parked her car and trailer. It had been, by all measures, a perfectly ordinary morning.
Until the goose appeared.
