Summary
The suns were setting on a slow day, one that hadn’t been filled with danger and shootouts. They were having more of these lately—the world was softening around them. More food meant more comfort and less anger. More safety meant people were less quick to draw their guns. It meant Vash the Stampede and Nicholas D. Wolfwood could spend an evening together, so lost in themselves together that both men didn’t even know it was nearly dark.
It’d started like it had quite often: Wolfwood sleepy after dinner and a hot day (not that you could get any other kind on a desert planet) going to slump down on the couch. Vash finishing up the dishes before Nick could steal some of the work. Vash lowering himself down on Nick’s lap once done, staring at his partner’s face with the intensity of studying every brushstroke in a work of priceless art in a museum.

The man lifts his weapon, points it towards Vash.
“You the Stampede?”
Vash shrugs and Wolfwood releases the wrapping around the punisher.
“Wolfwood,” Vash warns. “No.”
“I won’t kill you if you let us walk away,” Wolfwood calls. “We really didn’t mean any harm.”
“We don’t need to fight,” Vash says, holding out his hands. “I–”
The sand in front of him explodes. Vash is gone when the dust clears, he’s behind Wolfwood, moving with inhuman speed to shove him hard towards the bike. The gun the man wields has to have some kind of modification. It leaves craters in the sand, holes that burn so hot little balls of glass litter the area around them.
“Fuck,” Vash gasps. “Fucking run.”

Varka holds onto the end of his tail with his free hand as Lohen shifts on his lap, keeping it from wagging embarrassingly. Before he can overthink it, he downs the drink all in one go, letting the burning sugariness clog up his throat.
It doesn't have the unmistakable taste of medicine that Lohen usually taints his drinks with. Confusion washes over Varka for a second, until he sees Lohen chuckle.
"Alright! Let's get you back home before it hits."
The wolf walks right into the rabbit's trap.

Without a word, Wolfwood stepped into Vash’s room, closing the door behind himself. He heard the automatic lock engage, the same soft whirr that the one in his room made, but it was quiet, lost under the sound of his own pulse tripping with the way Vash boxed him in against the door.
“Missed you.”Maybe it's the honeymoon phase, maybe it's just the thrill of sneaking around. There's something about Vash saying he missed him after only an hour that gets Wolfwood's pulse thumping.

“You’re making that face again,” Kaveh says, one eye cracking open, voice annoyingly smug for someone still half-asleep. “The one where you’re trying to suppress an emotion and failing.”
“I don’t suppress emotions,” Alhaitham replies. “I manage them. Responsibly.”
Kaveh snorts. “Oh, is that what the internal aneurysm looks like? Good to know.”
In which Kaveh weaponizes freckles and Alhaitham forgets the scientific method.

Mydei doesn’t even seem to notice—which is worrying. Sure, this might be an era of peace for them, but would he really let anyone touch him like this when he’s this drunk?
“Pah! Hish—history?” Mydei fires back, the word wobbling out of his mouth so badly Phainon briefly wonders how much they’ve been drinking. “I’ll—I’ll tell you about history. It starts in Cycle Zero.”
Wait. What.
When Aglaea asked him to pick Mydei up after a drinking session with Cerydra, Phainon did not expect to hear Mydei recount all the different ways he has loved across 33 million cycles.
