The power fluctuated, lights going out. Phil was lying on the floor, staring at the ceiling, but his eyes might as well have been closed. The darkness was so complete it was like it clasped its fingers in his, breathed through his throat-- and then, slowly, he became aware of a shift on the other side of the glass. Faint, distant movement. A soft pulse of light, pinkish-red mingled with off-white, gentle bioluminescent flickers in the engulfing blackness. Fear twisted so far around that it turned to wonder.
He thought the lights were multiple creatures close together, at first. Then the emergency lights hummed back on, and the lights on the other side suddenly resolved into a being, a huge one with a long snaking tail and brightness down its side and shoulders and flowing hair and was that a goddamn fucking mer--
The mer reeled back and disappeared into the gloom. Phil stared after it and said blankly, forgetting it was only a plush crow listening: "What the actual fuck."

Gordon never came across as particularly intimidating; he was too frayed at the ends, too high strung and moralistic. Still, he was a trigger happy anxious wreck pumped with adrenaline (natural and artificial), and he was protected from anything and everything with the impenetrable HEV suit keeping him safe from radiation, bootboys, and Benreys.
This time, Gordon didn’t have the HEV suit. All he had were sweatpants (worn by time and fabric softener), and a t-shirt with a graphic so faded that Benrey couldn’t tell what it was. Motherfucker didn’t even have shoes, and he was currently struggling to maintain his balance on the slick floors in his basic-ass white socks. His eyes were bloodshot, and he had a red mark on his face, one that would soon enough turn into a deep purple bruise. Had two arms, though. A win is a win.
He regained his bearings as quickly as he could be expected to, and leapt back into action, presumably to continue his mad dash in the opposite direction. His eyes caught up with his brain and spotted the lone guard standing in the hallway in front of him.
His mouth fell open. He stared in shock.
Benrey pointed to the gun in Gordon’s hand. “Hey, did you steal that?"

“Alright, sure, I’ll fight a ghost,” Techno drawled, and this time Phil really laughed, leftover adrenaline finally receding the tiniest bit. “That’s fine, I’ve trained for that. We’ve got the ocean, so we’ve got salt, and, uh, scriptures, I can write some of those. God Emperor Technoblade, it’s got a nice ring to it. Truly classic. You and me, Phil, Antarctic popes. We’re starting our own religion.”
Phil’s mittens reeked of spilled fuel, pungent and sharp. His head ached, whiplash from the hard landing settling into a pounding behind his eyes, and he was numb and shivering, each frigid inhale scraping his lungs, but those sensations could probably keep him awake, as long he didn’t slip from shivering into hypothermia. Survival instincts, those were good to activate. He’d been in the air over twenty-four hours before he’d been shot down, he needed all the alertness he could scavenge.
“Yeah? What are we worshiping, slowly starving to death?”
“Chaos,” Techno informed him. “Chaos and frostbite. Speaking of frostbite, how’s the navigation going?”

A dog without its leash, a dog that could not bite when it was asked to do so, a dog that could not be trained on hatred. Useless, they were.D03 is an Engineer, and he did not hate Hank J. Wimbleton.
