For a brief moment, Dennis wondered if that’s what he was. If he were a boy. He did not know what it meant then, to be boy. In his mind he imagined what it would be to look like one, to be called a son rather than daughter, to go shirtless in the summer with his brothers in the creek nearby. And at that moment, something slid like a knife between his ribs, stabbed his heart, all honeyed sweet and achingly impossible. It felt like when he was little and would reach up into the night sky and think he could scoop up the stars.

Summary
What’re yous doin’ ‘ere?” The newsie questions after a moment, louder this time, and Davey approaches, getting a clearer view of the other in the low light. The boy is sitting on the floor, leaning against the wall, cap resting on a knee he’s pulled to his chest. His face is cast in darkness, shadows clinging to his expression until it is twisted into something horrifyingly vulnerable.
For a moment, Davey can’t find the words to respond with, mind tripping over itself at the sight of Jack Kelly, one of his best friends, looking more afraid than he’s ever seen him. Eventually, Davey tips his head towards the other and says, “I wanted to make sure our great union president is ready for tomorrow.”

Summary
The important part is the fact that they had made a promise, swore to each other, a damn oath, not to lie nor hide things from each other. The two of them were supposed to tell each other everything. And sure, Sarah may have kept a few secrets from Davey over the years such as who stole her last piece of chocolate or the real names of her crushes. However, Sarah had never acted so blatantly secretive as Davey had been doing for the past couple months. So obviously hiding something.
