There. That tangle of thick vines… she recognised it. That was right by where Steve had been attacked earlier. She moved quickly over to it, spotting the three dead bats clumped together, black blood spreading from their bodies.
If that was where Steve had been attacked, that meant that the gate was just a few feet behind her. Nancy whipped around, stepping blindly forwards, eyes raking over the ground ahead of her.
The gate was nowhere to be seen.
They were too late.
“Oh shit.”

Mike opened his mouth, then closed it. His brain short-circuited, trying to process. Max Mayfield—Max, who used to call him a dork-ass loser on principle, who once dumped a milkshake on his head for beating her at Pac-Man—wanted to keep sleeping with him. Casually. For the summer.
He took the beer when she offered it again, mostly to buy time.
“You sure?” he asked finally. “I mean, you and me…” He trailed off, unsure of where he was going. “Could get complicated.”
Max huffed a laugh. “Scared you’re gonna fall in love with me?”
Mike immediately rolled his eyes. What a completely ridiculous notion.
“No.” He glanced over at her, raising a brow. “Maybe you’ll fall in love with me.”
She snorted. “Dream on, Wheeler.”

Mike and Max can totally do this casual friends with benefits thing without it becoming a big deal. It’s just sex.
