“Avery,” the urgent voice says again, a little breathless and… Pained, he thinks? “You— how long have you—” he swears profusely under his breath, trembling ever so slightly. “Avery, you need to wake up.”
Wake up? But he is awake. He blinks, not understanding, and the strange golden gladiator seems to pick up on that pretty quickly. He grips his shoulders tighter, enough where he might have bruises later but can’t really find the will to care about it.
He should be getting back to work. His work is not done. He can’t rest yet.
But he doesn’t even try to pull away, too entranced by the yellow eyes that never once look away from him. They seem… Different, somehow. Something about the body before him is… Familiar, even if he’s pretty sure he’s never met him before.
(Or Derek returns to the garden in the church to snap Avery out of his trance in person rather than leaving a sign. Their first official meeting goes a little differently.)

A part of him was scared. Is scared. He could live a life beyond this. Could live a life forgetting Derek, a stranger he’s searched for longer than he’d even come to know. It would be easy, to forget. It would be simpler.
But simple is New Year’s Eve spent alone at home playing Minecraft off a laptop he’d picked up in a locker he was never meant to pry open. Simple is watching hours worth of video content, of the gameplay of a man solving puzzles in a seemingly impossible situation on that sandbox game. Simple is being alone.
Derek was always meant to reach Avery, and Avery was meant to be reached.
This time, Avery means to do the opposite.

The plan he has in his brain is not really a plan, moreso just a couple of half thrown ideas and maybe five steps into building back the life he had in the most painless way he could.
Maybe, he thinks, maybe this plan can start off with the family he misses– because he’s sixty and most of them too injured or too old or too dead–
Call him selfish but he misses them. He would rather find them than get himself back into that lonely existence he called a life before he woke up at nine.

What kind of loyalty kills?
That question was a mantra in Martyn’s mind, watching as Ren sifted through his inventory. The king grabs out an enchanted axe, diamond blade and etched with only the best spells from Renchanting.
It feels like a brick when it’s placed in Martyn’s gloved hands, like a weight that wouldn’t leave even if he dropped the weapon right then and there; he could’ve run miles and he still would feel the wooden handle against his palm. He searches past the dark sunglasses for any sign that this wasn’t the test — that this was a joke, rather, or maybe even a gift.
The gaze that catches onto him tells him anything but.
