Summary
Most people get their Soulmarks any time between fifteen and twenty. A few words, sometimes a sentence or even two. The next words their soulmate will say to them. Usually, the first words they'll ever hear from their soulmate.
Magnus never got a Soulmark. He's looked. Many times.
At first he just assumed it was because of what he was, some byproduct of his freakishness. In his centuries, he's learned differently. Most immortals, most warlocks like him, they get Soulmarks the same time as everyone else. Sometimes they have to wait decades, centuries, to hear those words. Some of them find another Soulmark, decades after living a life with their first.
But not Magnus.
Alec has never spoken a word. He can't. In a world where soulmates are connected by Soulmarks that show the first words the other will say to them, he wonders what this means for his soulmate.

Summary
Frankenstein really just radiates that kind of cool, charismatic energy, clearly both smart and kind. Raizel feels a little out of his depth, floundering for what to say next. His social skills have always been severely lacking, no matter how hard he practiced or how many hours he spent in occupational therapy. But his heart is full of the desire to make a connection. He decides it's time for his second-favorite trick. “Tell me more.”
“Oh, about the pre-med program? Haha, well, I’m sure you’ve heard about it. My concentration is in biochemistry. I think there are a lot of different applications, specifically in medical research…” Frankenstein continues to talk happily about things that Raizel doesn’t really understand. Quite pleased, Raizel listens attentively and participates with the occasional hum or nod to show his contentment with and enjoyment of social activities, and by extension, Frankenstein.
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
Raizel hits it off with the handsome blond barista at the campus café.

Summary
Frankenstein cuts a slice of vanilla cake and puts it on a small plate, delicately setting a fork next to it. “I made this last night,” he mentions absently.
“You had a nightmare last night,” interprets Raizel. Correctly, Frankenstein has to add.
It’s an old habit of his. He considers it one of his least harmful ones. Nights where Dark Spear’s visions and his memories would play on repeat, every horror he’d ever experienced coming back to the surface, leaving him shaking and ill… he’d get up, unable to stay in place, and drown his feelings in the process of mixing sugar and flour.

Summary
His mind hazy with exhaustion, Frankenstein simply could not comprehend the sight in front of him. The room in the inn he and Raizel had stopped at was simply furnished with a table, chair, small wardrobe, and… a bed. Only one bed. It felt like a poor movie cliché. How did we even end up in this situation?
“Master, you should lie down. The chair will be all right for me.”
Raizel shook his head. “Frankenstein, you need to rest.”
“I… I’ll be all right," he murmured. "Master, you expended a lot of energy recently. Please, you need to lie down.”
“No.”
They both seemed to realize the problem — neither of them were going to back down on this.
"Then we will share the bed. Is this an acceptable compromise?” asked Raizel calmly.
“What? No, we can’t!” exclaimed Frankenstein, purely from instinct, his cheeks reddening slightly.
“Frankenstein, either we will share this bed, or I will order you to sleep in it.”
That made Frankenstein stop short. He swallowed. “...Yes, Master. I suppose we will share the bed.”
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
There was only one bed, which makes Frankenstein and Raizel realize something about themselves.

Summary
When Raizel gazed out his window in Lukedonia, things were always changing. The birds, the trees, the sky, they all gradually changed under his quiet vigil. Now when he looked out at the world he could see that far more had changed than he ever anticipated. Humans had come far in 820 years.
820 years. Raizel frowned at the number. His race may have been an old one, but even to them that wasn’t exactly a small amount of time. To think the fight with Muzuka had put him to sleep for so long. From the hollow feeling in his chest he had the sinking impression it wasn’t long enough.

Summary
“Why?” M-21 cried. He couldn't make sense of it. He was a failed experiment, it was all anyone called him for as long as he could remember. Every scientist he saw made sure to take every opportunity to remind him of that fact.
"Because you deserve a chance to live," Raizel said simply. "You're not a failure. M-21 is M-21. What you are depends on you. The Union might have started your story but you will be the one to finish it."
A warmth spread in his chest at the notion that Raizel had gambled his life for the chance that M-21 might do something with his. And yet that statement didn't sit right. "And you don't?" He demanded.
Raizel paused a second too long for comfort.

Summary
Physics class felt exceptionally long today. On a normal day Raizel's eyes would swim at all the various symbols and he'd have trouble following along. Today he'd zoned out through the entire lesson. It wasn't that he intentionally wanted to ignore the teacher, especially not when Frankenstein brought them together just for him. But today concentrating on much of anything was an absolute impossibility.
His wings ached. They were truly, terribly, dreadfully aching and he simply couldn't deal, as the kids would say.

Summary
The next moment her brother does something Nat finds strange: he raises a fist up to his chest and he rubs small circles over it one, two, three times then just rests it there over his ribcage, lingering.
Equally strange is how Syd seems to not only understand the gesture, but repeats it back to him, then the pair just stare silently at one another, having another wordless conversation only the two of them are privy to.
Suddenly, Nat feels as if she is seeing something she’s not supposed to, like she’s intruding. She feels like she should look away, but she’s too intrigued by this discovery she’s stumbled upon to do so.
-
Or: Five times Nat suspects there might be something going on between Sydney and her brother, and one time she knows for sure.

"We're back." Though she knows nothing of what they're back to, what it means to be back with each other, or that they had even owned a time in their relation that they'd call a 'back' (she knows what it could mean; she knows its core-meaning, all despite).

“So…” he began again, “Fuck buddies, right?”
Carmy quickly negated this assumption as well. “He wasn’t a buddy. He was my boss.”
Richie nodded again before frowning. “Aren’t there rules against that shit?”
“You were just talking about Sydney and I-”
Richie waved off that statement, “This is barely a legit workplace and you’re barely a boss. I just thought you worked somewhere uppity in New York.”
“I did.”
“And you fucked the boss?”
“Well, he fucked me.”
“No shit!” Richie let out a surprised laughed. “But then, you are gay.”
Carmy, once again, quite inexplicable shook his head in negation. “I’m not.”
OR,
Richie decides to join in with everyone else to tease Carmy regarding his apparent chemistry with Sydney and he ends up in a rabbit-hole of discussion regarding Carmen's rather complicated sexual history.

Summary
His hands nearly shaking, Frankenstein stirs yet another spoonful of sugar into the strange Noble's tea. Six spoons now. It can’t possibly taste like tea at this point, and yet the look Raizel gives him becomes downright plaintive. God. Well then. He puts in one more and hands it back, completely uncertain of what will become of teatime.
But to his utter shock and horror, Raizel closes his eyes and drinks deeply. Then, his lips curve up ever so slightly. S-Seriously?
Suddenly something seems to come over Raizel. An almost… guilty look crosses his fine features.
“...Frankenstein,” says Raizel, whisper-soft.
“Y-Yes?”
“...please, one more spoonful.”
Eight. Eight teaspoons of sugar in one cup of tea. Raizel was going to develop diabetes. Noble physiology or no, it was simply not possible. The drink was sugar syrup at that point, not tea. Frankenstein shudders just thinking about it.
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
Frankenstein discovers first Raizel's taste for sweet tea, and later how sweet Raizel is himself.

“Okay, I’ve got good news and bad news.”
“Let’s hear it,” said Shinwu grimly.
Ikhan glanced at his computer. “First, the bad news. According to my calculations, there’s a 72% chance that Rai and Chairman Lee are together.”
The declaration was met with gasps of shock and horror. Shinwu outright growled, looking ready to punch something, and Sui had to physically hold him back. “I won’t allow this! Even if it's the chairman… I won’t let him hurt Rai!”
“Wait! Wait! You didn’t hear the good news!” said Ikhan, flailing his arms.
Shinwu barely got a hold of himself. “What?”
“There’s also a 97.8% chance that Rai and Chairman Lee are both mythical beings who are over two thousand years old.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, that makes sense.”
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
A situation involving a stray cat, a rainstorm, and Frankenstein's OCD prompts a reflection on a misunderstanding between Rai and the schoolkids.
