Or: In a last ditch effort to protect itself, Skye’s brain disassociates in an effort to deprive its parasite of nutrients (aka trauma). Now the Smiler must figure out how to get Skye to stop disassociating, which involves a lot more words of affirmation and a lot less dismemberment than it would normally prefer.

It was late, nearly midnight. She was in a long black limousine, the bright city lights piercing through the shaded windows. It hurt her eyes, but she refused to close them. She was too embarrassed to do much else than stare at her lap, trying to avoid the gaze of the man who sat next to her: her husband, Damian Desmond.
She had made a terrible mistake that night. One of which may have gotten him killed; or at the very least, killed his reputation. Anya would like to argue that it wasn’t her fault, that she couldn’t have known better. But that would be a lie. The truth is that she gambled, and her dice were rotten.

Summary
This whole thing was probably a bad idea. Probably a really bad idea. It was a hard sell. The higher ups raised eyebrows before they could finish with their proposal. Even those enthusiastic about the Phoenix program showed some hesitancy. The program barely worked as is. The “villains” they had repackaged into heroes were barely holding on. To pull a villain off of death row, it all seemed a little…stupid.
If it wasn’t for Track Star, the only remaining member left alive from Brave Brigade, the proposition would’ve been flushed and treated like nothing more than a fever dream. After all, the villain he was advocating for had taken down Track Star’s team one by one. Hunting them down like a feral dog until the Brave Brigade wasn’t enough for him anymore. So many heroes were lost, and everyone was ready to turn a blind eye to his death penalty.
The conditions came quick, but they had agreed.
There was to be no more Mecha Man, and Robert Robertson would not be allowed out in the field. Instead he would work as a dispatcher.

The footsteps stop. A moment of silence, and then—“Why isn’t he out yet?”
