Martin finds them eventually, tapered white wax, twenty or thirty of them beside a box of ancient (but dry) matches, and a little brass dish with a slot that just about fits the base of the candle. He feels like Scrooge, fitting the whole thing together, tucking a few more into his pocket before striking a match -
Which immediately goes out.
“Oh, fuck you,” Martin says into the murk.

And again, the fire vanishes. Quick and efficient as a breath. He shivers in the sudden cold.

Martin stands abruptly. His chair spins away from him, wheels squeaking on the cheap lino floor. The tension between him and Jon has reached never-before-seen levels. Tim could probably cut it with a knife. Or a particularly sharp spoon.
Then, Jon lurches forward and half-clambers atop the desk and kisses Martin, and Tim drops his sandwich.

Summary
Martin loves his job as a professor of English Literature at UCL. If it wasn't for his pretentious asshole of a colleague Jon Sims. Their already less than cordial working relationship only grows worse when they are forced to share an office. Of course, when Jon needs someone to pretend to be his boyfriend at a literature conference, Martin is the only other person in their department going. A deal with high stakes and unforeseen consequences is struck.
