Kendall started small. A casual “good boy” when you brought him the right coffee order in front of the entire executive team. The way he’d let his hand brush your lower back a little too long when you held the door. During one particularly tense board prep, he’d pointed at the floor beside his chair and said, “Sit here. I need you close.” You’d knelt without thinking, heart hammering, while Roman choked on his water and and Karl stared like you’d grown a second head.
“Kendall.” Karl had said tightly. “This is…highly unconventional.”
Kendall had just shrugged. “He’s efficient. I like him there.”
You stayed on your knees for the rest of the meeting, cheeks burning, utterly mortified and shamefully thrilled. No one said anything directly to HR.
This was the Roy family. Rules bent for them.

the idea of leaving florida to move somewhere like nockfell, a place no one on earth had ever heard of, and if they had, had never lived to tell the tale, was ridiculous, regardless of how much i hated florida. i had no future in either location, but one place had my entire life, newborn to now, buried deep within it. moving to nockfell tossed me into a pit of other people's memories, things i was vacant in. immigration into such a social circle, especially in high school, was suicide.
of course, that went right over my mother's head, but she hadn't been a new student, in a new school, in a new state in more years than i had been alive; her ignorance was expected. i was doomed to spending the rest of my years alone and bored, like florida, except now i would have no previous connections, no one i could remember, nothing to make myself feel better. no relationships would be reanimated here.
the word tragedy comes to mind.
