But the thing is, Snake's been trained to wait. One of the hardest parts of Miller's regimen weren't the grueling drills that pushed your body to its limit- it was learning to do nothing but stare at a vacant wall for hours and still remain alert. Most rookies cracked within the first few hours. Those who did were sentenced to suffer another eternity in hell.
Compared to that, watching Hal slowly come apart under his hands is a goddamn treat.

Summary
An AU where Snake remained in the government's clutches as the perfect soldier of the Les Enfants Terrible project and is sent to investigate Armstech and their secret development of the bioweapon Foxdie. Hal works at Armstech as an engineer and catches his eye. Believing to find him suspicious, Snake keeps watch over him, only to quickly fall in love with him.
Hal is attacked by mercenaries when he gets too close to the discovery of Foxdie and is rescued by Snake, who he finds out has been stalking him. Together, Snake learns how to accept that he's a person, and Hal learns how to live without a mask.

Whenever Grace was feeling down, she liked to imagine all the different ‘R’ Commanders, Captains and Operatives as the same mythical “superhero” BSAA soldier. It felt nice to imagine (if only for a moment) that wherever a bioweapon would spring up there would be an immovable soldier to meet its unstoppable force, saving the day.
But of course, no one person could do all that.Or:

“I wanted to do this project with you because of your viewpoint,” he continues and Snake drifts back. “The way you see things. I already know you’re beyond physically capable, but. We’re a lot alike. In some respects. Our lineages, our ghosts.” He pauses to consider, then looks at him in the dark and Snake wonders how much he can see. Average in a way he wishes he could trade for. “Just, sometimes, you worry me.”
He hates that, too. He looks away and drinks and listens to the yowl out there while the faces hang and blink phosphate in the treeline. Nothing moves.
“No need,” he eventually says. “Perfectly fine.”
