The bathroom itself looks like a murder scene, and there's this whole bathtub-situation— the rim of the tub is, of course, smeared with blood, and the water is darkened with it. And then there’s Peter, head lolled to the side, barely conscious.
Now, it’s one thing for Wade to be strewn out in a blood-filled tub looking half-dead, but his roommate? His un-enhanced, nerdy roommate?
“This isn’t a great look for ya, I’ll be honest,” Wade says, closing the door behind him and striding into the room with all the confidence he can muster. “Deathly-ill-chique went out of fashion at least a hundred years ago.”

“So what’s the problem?” Alhaitham asked again.
“Don’t trivialize it,” Kaveh snapped, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face. “It's probably psychological, but I can't unpack all my fucking trauma and trust issues in a day - which is all the time I have before the symptoms get out of control.”
“You mean... you've never -” Alhaitham started, planning on finishing his question with ‘been intimate with anyone?’ - but Kaveh cut him off and threw his hands up in the air.
“No, nobody’s ever fucking made me come, Alhaitham. Is that clear enough for you?”

"Kaveh," Alhaitham normally doesn't care for softness. He isn't a man who minces his words or tries to make them more palpable for others. Not even for Kaveh, especially not for Kaveh. Right now, Alhaitham is trying to be soft. His boyfriend's voice is gentle like he's trying to lure back a kitten at the edge of windowsill. Kaveh would laugh at the tone if he could manage to get any air in his lungs. "Kaveh, can you hand me the knife?"
And Kaveh doesn't want to. He doesn't like that he's relapsed; he hates how the blood has dried on his skin and how blotchy his face feels from tears, but in comparison, the knife is an unchanging, almost calming presence. His grip tightens on the blade, and he hears Alhaitham take in a sharp breath.
"Kaveh, please."

That inescapable sense of guilt has Kaveh in its grasp again, but his friends are there to loosen its hold.
The door of the records room snaps open, and Panah rushes inside with a stack of papers in his hand. “Scribe Alhaitham,” he says. “There’s been an accident near Port Ormos. We just received this preliminary report from on-site. They’re estimating over a hundred casualties, so far.”
That explains the commotion outside. “Alright,” Alhaitham says, accepting the pile of papers from Panah’s outstretched hand. “You said this was an accident at…?”
He scans the title of the report, and his lungs stop.
CONSTRUCTION INCIDENT – ARDRAVI VALLEY EXHIBITION HALL
That’s the commission Kaveh turned down last year.

When Kaveh looks into the mirror, the person who stares back at him is someone he does not recognise. He raises his hand to touch his hair with trembling fingers and the stranger in the mirror does the same, but it feels like staring into a black hole, like leaning over water and seeing a distorted face peering back. And well, maybe Kaveh just isn’t real at all–maybe he’s just a shell, with dead eyes and gray skin and limp hair like a toy with all its stuffing pulled out. Maybe he has no body at all and his consciousness is bereft of reality, or maybe all of this is fake and nothing is real and the world doesn’t even exist.
