The group with being stuck in both a facility, and a different dimension every night, start to have low hopes and higher doubts about figuring something out to free them from this nightmare. With discovering the fact that their families are now trapped in the same predicaments as they are, Ashlyn now feels entirely at fault and doesn't know how to deal with it. She allows herself to be experimented on in place of her friends and loved ones. The torture the girl goes through is beyond what any average 16 year old could ever handle; so how on earth is she alive? And how much more can she take before her friends find out, or worse, before she meets her near inevitable fate.

“What?” Mike snaps.
“It’s just… you never talk about her,” Lucas says.
Mike’s grip on his beer tightens and he doesn’t say anything. Drinking so much was a mistake. His head is starting to spin in a mix of frustration, guilt, anger-
“It’s been years Mike,” Lucas is saying, gentle like he is when he’s trying to get through to someone, “how are you going to move on if you can’t even talk about, you know, the good memories?”
The good memories are all tinted red and feel like impending doom, except they already happened, they’re not impending, they’re just always doomed now.
“Maybe I won’t,” Mike mutters, words slurring.

Post canon au with a little twist. Karen and Ted Wheeler don't survive the demogorgon attack in season 5. When all of his friends leave for college, Mike stays in Hawkins to take care of Holly so Nancy can finally go to college. Mike is left with a house to take care of, a sister to raise, and a whole lot of repressed guilt and grief.

Mike was burning up. Or dying, maybe. He couldn’t tell.
Because no matter what he did, he couldn’t get Will’s face out of his head. The way he had smiled so gently, the way he looked up at Mike through his lashes. The gentle shadows cast across his face by the streetlamps. He sat on the edge of his bed. Will slept in this room last week.
Mike dropped his head to his hands, letting out a groan.
Will’s lips, parting to say “goodbye, Mike”.
Mike fisted his hands in his hair, tugging. What was going on? What did that mean?
“Mike?” He looked up to see Nancy standing in his doorway, dressed in pajamas. “Is something wrong?”
And, mortifyingly, tears sprung to his eyes.

In his senior year of high school, Mike has a crisis. College looms on the horizon, and he'll have to live without the people he leans so heavily on. And Will – how can Mike live without Will?
From September '88 to June '89, his understanding of himself changes.
