“You play pretty,” Jonathan said. “Real pretty. But every note’s planned out before your fingers ever touch the keys.”
“And your point?”
“My point is you don’t listen.”
Edward let out a short laugh of disbelief. “Listen? You stormed into my performance like a drunkard with a death wish. And now you’re criticizing how I play?”
A few nearby patrons laughed into their drinks.
The man’s expression barely changed. “You know how to improvise?”
Edward lifted his chin. “Obviously.”
“Then prove it.”

Thoughts stopped forming somewhere in the middle of it. He could only watch in abject horror as the shape in front of him—Jonathan, still somehow—became something else entirely. -

Red.
All he could see was red.
Not the muted color of brick or rust, but something richer—velvet, wine, the inside of closed eyelids when the sun burned through them. It surrounded him on all sides, bleeding into the floor, the walls, the air itself until the world felt steeped in it.
Jon wasn’t sure where he was.
The thought occurred to him only briefly before fading away, unimportant.
All that mattered was the pair of eyes watching him from across the room. -

Need, he thought sourly; such a useful tool. But so dangerous, and so fickle. One could easily discover they hadn’t ever needed something they thought they’d die without, or that they’d needed something all along and never realized until it’d gone away.
Jonathan was driving him out into the countryside to kill him. And Edward was letting him.
