Summary
Ash falls to the floor, barely catching himself. Minute steps aside, allowing Spoke to hammer a boot into Ash’s stomach. He wheezes at that, and before he can recover, Spoke picks him up by the shoulders and shoves into the bookcase behind him. Several books fall down, some hitting Ash’s head. He hisses from pain, but when he looks up at Spoke, there’s a smile on his face. “Didn’t take you for a sadistic type.”
Spoke raises his sword. “You’re just getting what you deserve,” he promises, and then—
Before he can bring the blade down, there’s a sound of breaking blocks above him, and something—someone—falls straight on him. They do barely any damage, but they startle him enough to make him stumble back and allow them to insert themself between Spoke and Ash. They crouch on the floor, covering Ash with their body, and point a loaded crossbow at Spoke.
Their hands shake.
During the final confrontation with Ash, Spoke decides to kill him. He meets unexpected resistance.

One of the few well-documented things about exploiting is how it can change the user. Mentally, in the way of realizing that there is power in warping reality, and what are consequences to a god? Emotionally, in the overwhelming rush of adrenaline and control over whatever has been altered.
There’s another possible alteration, though, one that is not so much talked about. Physical warping, the loss of humanity through seizing godhood, or some fragment of it, for one’s own gain.

They had a gentleman’s agreement for handling their business in the field but this was different. The teen had gone to the trouble of finding him, determining his target, and the ideal location of the hit. It would be a shame to waste that kind of effort, besides he needed to know how he had done it when his employers hadn’t. He would go to Alex’s meeting and then he would get his answers.
