“Becuase you ruined my life, Hebert!” Dan shouts, and then stopped. They’d never talked about it. Not afterwards, not in Peru, not when building the bride.
“Okay. Fine.” Herbert says, with an eye roll and a glare. “I ruined your perfect life. If not for me you’d be so happy. You’d be a doctor, you’d be married, you’d have kids and you’d have a perfect boring life. Is that really worth everything we achieved?”
“I don’t know Herbert, was it?” Dan’s never been this mad at Herbert before. “Was college worth it, was thirteen years of your life in jail worth it, was Meg,” He lets her name hang in the air for a moment. “Worth it?”
“You already sent me to jail, Dan. What do you want now, an apology?”
“The one time I needed your re-agent to work.” Dan says, and he’s always towered over Herbert, but now it’s extreme. “And it failed. You failed.”
“It didn’t fail completely. Her heart was very well preserved.”

“You made me,” He repeats, and now he can’t stop staring at his hands. There’s a tiny little line between the hand and the wrist, where the two parts from two different bodies had been sewn together. It wouldnt be visible if you didn’t know what you were looking for. He starts drumming his fingers against the slab.
