Summary
“What is it that you want?”
Because that was what this was about wasn’t it? He wanted something. The main family never disdained to speak to the lower members without a need and Gojo Satoru was not about to be the exception.
“I’m going to recommend you for first-grade sorcerer status.”
“… and yet again I ask, what is it that you want?”
Gojo leaned back, tilting his face towards you with an easy grin. You wondered if he saw the world the way you did with your Limitless when his eyes were blinded. Seeing only the impressions of energy and sensation. Could he see your expression? The confusion in the downturn of your mouth or the suspicion in the narrowness of your eyes?
“Just a fiancée.”

If they were once celestial bodies, Satoru is now a black hole. Still collecting dust, except now it sinks endlessly into him rather than accumulating at his surface, dissipating rather than building him up. Still just a theoretical part of the universe rather than a tangible thing despite the way his presence strikes an existential sort of dread. Always looming, never quite real.

“You know,” Satoru throws out once like he’s about to mention a fun fact about a landmark they’ve passed. “You can be mean to me, or honest or whatever. I’m not gonna snap.”
“I don’t want to.”
Satoru snorts, “That’s a lie. You definitely want to sometimes, you go all silent.”
Suguru tilts his head, “Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“Alright then,” Suguru sighs. “Fuck you.”
Satoru yaps out a laugh, head thrown back, and Suguru welcomes the buoyant sound ricocheting around them.

That was the point of Suguru. Satoru did not let go of him yet. The stone in the sole of his shoe dug into his heel. The eyelash clung and clung and poked him in the eye. It was still snowing.
I’ll miss you, he thought, I’ll miss you I’ll miss you I’ll miss you I’ll miss you, over and over until the words blended together to a slurry in his head. The ache would be real this time. Suguru would graduate from just out of reach to gone. In the future, Satoru would catch himself wondering what he was out there doing.

Three months. He’ll stay three months. Just long enough for that shrimpy Zhang Chengling to wean into this new world, and then he’ll leave. Just three months he’ll allow himself that brassy, beautiful line cook, who barked the most flirtatious insult at Zhou Zishu as he charged down the cracked asphalt with a towering pallet jack of wholesale soy sauce boxes; his voice magnetic like an army general’s, clear above the rumbling gallop of his condiment fleet.

Zhou Zishu has never wanted anything so keenly before. He’s spent all his life drifting along like plankton, and the one time he’s found a star to follow, the currents are determined to yank him away.
Zhou Zishu takes time to kiss Wen Kexing slowly, relishing the soft, tangible press of lips, the sleek slide of tongues past each other. He wants to make it perfect, tries to make it enough. He thinks he gets close, if the soft, hoarse sounds he pulls out of Wen Kexing are anything to judge by. But soon it won’t be enough again. It will never be enough, until he can chain himself here, and throw the key away.

To try, in his own flawed and stunted way, to make room for a future together in the wasteland of their mistakes.

They followed the black earth up the courtyard until they reached Wen Kexing, and something like the sun came up on the intruder’s face

Perhaps grief wasn’t a thing you felt, a thing that happened to you; it was a thing you were. A thing you became, more and more, with every year. Even after you broke it down; burned it; buried it deep; fed it to the earth; it was in the soil, in the roots, in the water, in the air, in your blood and qi and skin. How could you survive without it? You ate grief and it became you. -

“A-Xu,” Wen Kexing says with his indulgent, half-amused patience but — cautious underneath it. “You used to like my hair.”
If Zhou Zishu was a nicer person, he would answer by saying: I like all of you, idiot or perhaps Yes, whatever, you’re still beautiful. But he is not a nice person and he does not like it, being the unreasonable one, so he leans closer and says, with emphasis:
“I really liked it when you were able to walk on your own.”

He could, he realises, paint tree blossoms all over Wen Kexing’s body now, purple and coral. He could carve poetry onto his skin, return all of his useless words to him. Take his time with it; one day, one day he will.

“You look at me.” His fingers twitch again; he is watching Zhou Zishu’s face closely. “You look at me as if it hurt you.”“Nonsense.”

Summary
“Stupid,” Zhou Zishu breaths out. He is panting; they both are. They are both stripped of outer layers of their clothing, hair dripping with water, smelling like the lake, and sweat, and blood. A shadow of something passes through Zhou Zishu’s face, disappears. He returns Wen Kexing’s gaze steadily, not displeased, not quite amused. Watching him. Wen Kexing is suddenly very aware of every place where their bodies are and are not touching.
“Ah,” he says slowly, delighting in the attention. He shifts his weight forward, puts his hands on both sides of Zhou Zishu’s head, brings their faces closer. “I caught you.”

“What’s next?” Wen Kexing finds that he doesn't want to know, but he asks anyway.
“Scent, touch, hearing, and then sight.”
He pulls Zhou Zishu’s face down to his neck. “What’s this smell?”
“Um, the green bottle with the cork—no, the agate stopper—on the stool next to the bathtub.”
Wen Kexing lets him go, reassured at least by that. He thinks for a while, and needles out, “So all this time, I’ve been cooking for someone who can’t even taste the hard work I put in.”

Bookmarker's Notes
Shepherd’s purse and lambsquarters are deftly pinched and dropped into the basket as well; they are small treasures, offered from a land that doesn’t understand the shape of human sorrow, and he has no problem taking what he needs from it.
---
Zhou Zishu looks up at him, his brown eyes wide and unfocused. His hair is spilling from its leather cord in dark, damp waves. His mouth open and obscenely pink, bruised like tender petals, a shining trickle of spit drying from the corner of his mouth to his chin. Wen Kexing can’t resist licking the trail away, nipping below his jaw while he’s at it to pull an unexpected, impossibly lewd groan out of Zhou Zishu. He indulges in the pliant heat of Zhou Zishu’s mouth for a moment before he pulls slowly back, and drinks in this person, plastered to him like wet silk on skin. This person, who fate has relented, and let his decaying body stumble into the arms of. This person, who crashes into his life like a star burning up, whose flames he marvels at, and then is horrified by. This person, who he tries desperately to cradle like a waning firefly, without letting him feel the confines of his palms. This person, who he would kneel on and swallow knives for, if doing so means he can beg for more time, for anyone who can give that to him.
---
“Lao Wen,” he says, voice rasping. “I don’t think I can smell you anymore.”The late January air feels particularly biting. It could be the coals that have cremated to white ash in their warmer, or the sudden creeping stretch of frost inside Wen Kexing, seizing around his guts.
He gathers Zhou Zishu tight against him and strokes his back, aching when he feels him take a shuddering breath.
“I can’t,” Zhou Zishu repeats.
“We’ll deal with it,” Wen Kexing soothes. “You got used to not tasting as well. It’s all temporary.”
“It’s different now,” Zhou Zishu says, muffled into Wen Kexing’s chest, straight into his heart. “I already miss the way you smell. And I miss the way you taste, even though I’ve never known it.”
Wen Kexing would squeeze himself into a tiny glass vial for Zhou Zishu, and live forever spread thin at the pulse points of his neck. He would fold himself into a sachet of herbs for him, the kind of fragrant embroidered trinket that ill-fated lovers gave each other despite disparate betrothals. He would take a knife to himself and carve, if Zhou Zishu wanted a taste of him. He would. But there’s nothing he can do to help him.
---
She jingled out of his life just like that—the clear guiding bell of his growing pains, his adolescence, fading away from his story and into her own.
---
Something about him had changed in the months that Zhou Zishu was unconscious for. A grounding steadiness to his gait, a new solidity in his hands when he folds laundry. And even when he’s tremoring like a vagrant feather above Zhou Zishu, panting A-Xu, A-Xu, fuck, you feel so good, I’m so happy we’re doing this again, A-Xu, his voice had a weight in gold, and it didn’t feel like he would blow away any second, anymore.Zhou Zishu doesn’t ask how, or why. It’s a blessing enough to witness summer flowers without knowing what they’re called. But he suspects the shape of the change, because he’s held it himself.
