Hux, too, knew how to break people, but he also knew when not to; his own Stormtrooper program that his unconditioned officers operated was proof of that. Clearly, this was a distinction Snoke failed to understand.
When Kylo returns from a meeting with his master broken and wrong, it becomes clear that Snoke has gone too far. Hux is left to not only pick up the pieces, but to put them back together again while considering the past and the future.
