Summary
'The druids mentioned a Quercetum is ailing: a blight of some kind.'
'Sounds painful,' Gwaine said from where he and Elyan rode behind them, the tack jingling in rhythm to the horses' steady pace. 'Do they need an ointment or something?'
Merlin snorted. 'A Quercetum is a grove of oak trees. I don't think one of Gaius' creams will do much good. It needs me and Arthur to set things right.'
When Arthur assists Merlin in a magical ritual, he realises just how much could truly be his, if he only had the courage to ask for it.

When Arthur helps Merlin, intoxicated by his changing magic, he realises the truth neither of them have ever dared to put into words.

Summary
Gwaine laughs so hard he needs to sit down, landing heavily on the rickety chair in his chamber, and then so hard that he actually can't breathe and he's momentarily afraid he might die from it.
"Well," he says when he's recovered enough to speak. "Our King has finally managed to get hold of the right stick, at least, even if he is firmly grasping it by the wrong end."
Merlin glares at him, like he can't see why this is the funniest thing Gwaine has ever heard. "What the hell did you say to him?"
A throwaway comment leads Arthur to an inevitable conclusion: Gwaine is a sorcerer, and has been protecting him and his knights with magic for years. There's only one thing to do – repeal the ban on magic.
Now if only he could work out why this makes Merlin so angry.

Summary
"Sometimes I dream of leaving Camelot," Arthur spoke into the quiet of the forest.
It was quiet except for their horses' trotting steps, not too quiet to alert the paranoid knights, but enough for everyone to hear about his silly dream. It was apparent that Arthur intended to trust it only to Merlin's ears, but Merlin blundered through it and answered much louder, for everyone to hear and to join in the jest.

Summary
A hand grasped his arm, sending a brief thrill down Merlin's nerves as he was forced around to face the person behind him. Armour gleamed in the firelight: supple chainmail glinted, and the solid iron of a pauldron curved lovingly over one broad shoulder. The length of a sword blade separated them. The point hovered, steady and sure, over Merlin's heart, braced to run him through, but he did not care about any of that. He was too busy drinking in the sight of the man before him.
He could never forget him, no matter how many centuries had passed.
'Arthur?'
When Merlin ultimately fails in his destiny, the fading remnants of magic that linger in the modern world fling him not just back in time, but sideways as well. He ends up in a Camelot where all his friends are alive, well and aware of his magic.
He ends up in a Camelot where his alternate self died almost a year ago.
Can he, Arthur and their friends still forge the golden age he was once promised, or will grief and suspicion tear them apart?

Summary
'Fear not, my boy. There are many pitfalls between negotiations and an actual wedding day. Perhaps there'll be no need for your jealousy.'
'My what? I am not jealous!'
Gaius merely smiled at him and returned to his stew. 'Of course not. Now eat your vegetables.'
When Uther's usual efforts to arrange a match for Arthur take a more serious turn, Merlin comes to a few realisations about his own feelings. He also learns that maybe he does not know Arthur as well as he once thought. Can he get to the bottom of the tangle of Arthur's emotions, and maybe sort his own out in the process?

Summary
'Magic is as much part of nature as the earth, sea and sky. Other sorcerers who sought out the circle found that their power developed certain affinities. Their abilities became tied to the cycle of the year. There would be one season at which their power was at its peak and another where it lay almost dormant. They became more closely connected to the natural ebb and flow of the world.'
'But?'
'But they were not Emrys. His strength is beyond anything in living memory, and the heights he could reach are, as yet, unknown.' Aglain spread his hands, his shoulders rolling in a graceful shrug. 'I can only tell you that the Tir Na Lei means no harm. Three is the number: the ritual is set. The circle will not call on Emrys again.'

Summary
'What was in that potion?' he rasped, swallowing the pasty flavour in his mouth. His lungs felt unpleasantly raw, and a dull ache stirred to swift life in his temples.
Gaius scurried about, opening windows and retrieving some water, pressing a cup into Merlin's hands. 'In small doses, it's an excellent tonic for numerous fevers and ailments. However, it has some rather unfortunate interactions with those who use magic.'
Merlin closed his eyes in disbelief. 'Unfortunate how?'
'It varies. The more powerful the mage, the more... extreme the reaction.'
------
An accident in the healing rooms leaves Merlin confined to his chambers, ailing and miserable. There's a unicorn in the kitchens and a nymph in the marketplace well. The only silver lining is that Arthur is there to tend him. Will the distance that has grown between Camelot's king and his court sorcerer widen, or will they finally heal the breach for the better?

Summary
It was not often that Merlin got a moment to himself. Between taking care of Arthur, helping Gaius, and protecting the kingdom from the latest magical disaster, he had very little time to call his own. If he wanted anything like peace and quiet, then he had to steal it. Once, he might have been the good, dedicated boy that his mother had raised. He might have heaved a sigh and got on with his chores.
Not anymore.

Summary
'This wouldn't have happened if you'd just done what you were told for once!'
Merlin let out a tiny sigh, as if he was being tiresome. Of course, it wasn't the first time they'd had this particular argument but Arthur hadn't won it yet, so he had no choice but to keep trying.
'I'm the prince; you're my servant. I give orders and you follow them. That's how it works.'

Summary
The sob that escaped him was a tiny thread of sound, little more than an embellishment upon the air. He did not wail. It was too big for that, too much, all the more painful for being unexpected. Not Arthur's betrothal, but his own reaction to it. It was as if all the nebulous uncertainty of the day had crystallised into a blade.
Worse, he had no one to blame but himself. He had never told Arthur how he felt. It had always seemed like a step too far, and now it was too late.
Tomorrow, he would pick up the pieces of himself and find the strength to bear the scars of it. He would be the friend Arthur needed, and he would pretend that was enough.
Tonight, he mourned.
------
When Arthur announces his courtship to Lady Aveline of Spirehold, Merlin resigns himself to never speaking of his love. Yet the universe has other ideas. Stuck in the same, repeating day, can Merlin find his courage and break free, or will he lose his last chance to speak of what lingers in his heart?

Summary
As winter hit in earnest, Merlin started to fade away before Arthur's eyes. Arthur took advice from Gwen to figure out why his manservant regularly seemed to lose himself to something they couldn't see. Leaving the episode to play out resulted in Merlin admitting to a fear that Arthur hadn't realized he had, as if Arthur would ever let anything hurt his best friend. He would kill anyone who tried — he just needed to make sure Merlin knew that too.

"Then sleep. I'll stand guard."
"I thought you said it was safe here?"

Summary
Loneliness is an insidious thing. When Merlin looks at Arthur, he sees not just a prince waiting for his time to rule, but a young man struggling to find his place in the world, with little help from anyone else.
The truth is, Arthur needs more than the friendship Merlin can offer. He needs people he can trust: men and women who will become his court and his confidants, and if he is going to survive to take the throne and lead Camelot into its golden age, he needs them sooner rather than later.
Finding loopholes in Uther’s laws is no easy feat. Court life is a dangerous game, but it’s one Merlin has every intention of winning so that Arthur can have knights of his choosing by his side.
And then there is the matter of his magic…
