Here was a small fact: being immortal didn't mean one was exempt from experiencing chronic pain.
Here was a bigger one: Verso had a pain threshold, and he had met it the night after his father had tried to kill the entire crew with a horde of flesh-hungry Nevrons with hands the size of the Eiffel tower.
(Those damned things still haunted him. The memory of them, of their gaping maws and clicking mandibles, ready to devour Maelle if Gustave hadn't shot them with an agility speaking of years of practice, was one that he didn't think would ever fade.)

When people compare a bad shock to a bucket of cold water being thrown on them, one has to wonder how bad a situation must be when YOU'RE thrown into an ocean of cold water.
Aeon, the unfortunate individual with the dubious honor of being our protagonist, gets to find out for himself, free of charge, and mysteriously, free of rhyme or reason. On his first ever day visiting a fan convention, ready to burn some cash and socialize with nerds afflicted with the same mental illnesses as him, Aeon steps through a door looking for the bathrooms... And promptly falls into salt water instead.
Of course, while he was prepared for an adventure through the depths of capitalism and fandom's lovechild, he was NOT prepared for drowning. He especially isn't prepared for the person that saves him - let alone every other impossible thing that happens afterward.

When there was nothing to hold onto, not even one's family, was when a merperson turned, transformed, morphed, grotesquely, into a siren.
That was when they began craving the flesh and blood of prey far more intelligent than fish. Humans. Gods, but they were never that successful.
No mer wanted to admit that they were even tangentially related to the monsters.
It was irreconcilable with their sensibilities.
Yet, of course, sirens had no such sensibilities, having clawed their way out of hell, in which morality and qualms died a sad, painful, death.
Or: Siren!Ajax really really really wants to eat Zhongli. In the literal way. What he doesn't know is that Zhongli is completely fine with it.
