Anyway. It’s a notification from Grindr. Someone tapping his profile, which is all well and good. Or it is, until he opens the offending profile, and—it’s the kind of absurdity that gives you whiplash, that makes you doubt if you’re quite sane. Kazuma blinks—rubs at his eyes.
The profile is still there. It’s still Ryunosuke.

He imagines it—their conversation flowing, Ryunosuke laughing, rubbing the back of his neck the way he does when he gets embarrassed about being too loud. Maybe his date would reassure him, or laugh with him, or—something, and Ryunosuke would smile, shy, tiny, and—
Have fun, Kazuma didn't say. Thank God he didn't. Ryunosuke would've seen right through him.

Kazuma took a second - perhaps a minute - to absorb that, cautious that he must have misheard. But Ryuunosuke was unwavering still, painfully gentle with each prodding word, and what is Kazuma anyway, if not once again helplessly pulled into Ryuunosuke’s orbit.

In two or twenty or forty years, still sleeping upwards of fourteen hours a day, still dealing with pain splitting his head open, still struggling to organize his thoughts. Still forgetting, and forgetting, and forgetting, retreading the same steps ad nauseam. Like God is at his shoulder, mocking: This is what you get for cheating death.

Even though Naruhodo's speech did not seem spectacular, or perhaps, precisely because of that, he delivered it perfectly with clear enunciation and even clarity. I'm somewhat bitter that I've lost to something so plain, but Professor Mikotoba reminded me that there was an elegance to simplicity. There's a validity to his words, but he doesn't know that when I spoke to Naruhodo after the competition, the man actually had the gall to tell me something as ridiculous as "speaking fast is a hobby of mine."
What an odd and infuriating character.
