The first time Shane had sensed it, they’d been three goals up, winning a game they didn’t really deserve to win.
‘Rozanov - ‘ something on his face must have given away how truly terrible he feels, because Hollander is stepping closer, a look of concern etched over his features. He bites back his words - Ilya sways, just barely, dizzy all of a sudden - and Hollander gets out ‘Ilya,’ the name low and far too intent. Hollander smells worried, rain-charcoal-loam, a thick miasma.
Ilya chokes back a noise of pain as his stomach cramps, deep pain low in his pelvis - another wave of heat flushes over his cheeks - and it’s then that he feels the first trickle of slick and realizes, horribly and suddenly, what must impossibly be happening. What has been happening.

On February 14, 2014, Russia passed "The Omega Repopulation Initiative" law.
Rapidly declining birth numbers, and the inability to keep up with the in vitro research of western countries, led a desperate Russian government to decree that everyone with the secondary gender designation of omega henceforth could be conscripted to birthing facilities, where suitable alphas and betas would be selected for genetic screening and compatibility with the purpose of repopulation.
The male omegas, a rarity even among the rare omegas, seldomly made it to the facilities. Instead, they became symbols of the most exclusive of commodities, traded among those who believed the worth of a human life was theirs to decide.

Shane Hollander is 18 years old and a beta when he first competes at World Juniors in Saskatchewan. Shane's only expectation is to bring home gold. Somehow Shane is going to have to find a way to explain why he's suddenly pulling out of the 2009 draft, come to terms with giving up hockey and caring for a baby completely alone. All while desperately wishing he could share the joys of first smiles and the stress of sleepless nights with the alpha he's never quite been able to forget.
