    Ilya doesn’t even try to stop the litany of Russian swears from spilling out. He also doesn’t stop himself from cursing Marly’s whole family line, and then verbalizing some of his more homicidal thoughts about Scott Hunter and the kitchen sink. He lets his Russian ranting die out and takes a few deep breaths.

    Everyone has quieted to look at him.

    “Feel better?” Marly asks.

    Maybe Ilya could drown Marly in the sink along with Hunter. Maybe he could kill everyone in the suite before Shane wakes up. He’d have to kill the butler guy, too…and the front of house staff…and the wedding chapel staff…and then convince Shane to run away with him to somewhere that would neither extradite to the US nor prosecute them for being gay. Messy. Too messy.

    OR

    Ilya wakes up with a wedding ring and a WHOLE LOT of questions...but at least Marly and Scott fucking Hunter are having a good time. This is Ilya's worst nightmare which, as it turns out, features a night of blackout drinking, misguided but supportive friends, and some VERY stupid decisions.

    And then, across the dancefloor, lit up in cyan and lilac and magenta, looking like somebody's God, Ilya Rozanov sucks some girl's tongue down his throat as he makes eye contact with Shane.
    And Shane has seen this film before.
    …
    Shane's day is almost as perfect as his life. Hockey star, beautiful girlfriend, loving family and team. And the endless thoughts about his super casual ex-hookup plaguing his every waking moment. When Shane finds himself stuck in a time loop with no way out, what else is there to do but a little introspection and spiralling? Oh, and calling that casual hookup.

The interview today is just more proof that they’ve always come as a pair, and that they always will. First and second; second and first. Rozanov and Hollander; Hollander and Rozanov. They’ll be mentioned in the same breath for the rest of their careers, then they’ll be dumb stories about which of them will retire first, and then they’ll be written about together in the hockey histories that Shane reads. They’re fucking inseparable.

    Only, not like that. Not… coupled. No, it’s Hollander versus Rozanov, now and forever.

    Objectively, this used to be true. Nowadays Shane has many, many plans, between his nightly plans to look at Ilya’s penis through Skype and his various long-term plans laid out helpfully in his notebook, Canva (For Ilya’s sake. He is a visual learner), and more recently, Excel. Shane loves that excel sheet. He’s colour coded it.

     

    In 2017, Shane Hollander spirals and proposes to his boyfriend of 4 days (or 7 years, or 9 years, or not his boyfriend at all, depending on how you look at it), which leads to a lot of plans, weird theories in the Montreal Voyageur locker room, some Twitter drama, and Ilya Rozanov entering his WAG era.
