“I…” Simon heard his own voice crack. “Grace, I-”
“Grace?”
“What?”
“Grace… Is that… I-I’m sorry- Is that my name?”
Simon’s heart stopped. Everything became impossibly far away.
He never pictured Grace losing his memory. He was staring at Simon like he was a stranger and not a person he shared a bed with for almost a year. Grace even forgot his own name. Simon hadn’t just betrayed Grace’s trust.
He had become the reason the man he loved no longer knew who he was.
OR
Simon, Rocky, and Adrian are worried that Grace is refusing to sleep even though he is sick. Adrian recommends the sedative they found on the Hail Mary. Simon secretly gives it to Grace and, little did they know, the sedative had the amnesia drug in it. Simon now needs to somehow earn an amnesiac Grace's trust. He thought it would be easy, since Grace has always seemed kind, but instead he meets Ryland "staggering waste of carbon" Grace.
Grace wakes up and finds himself on an alien planet with no memory of who he is. All he knows is that there are rock-spiders that are freaking him out and a pretty-handsome looking guy who he doesn't trust at all. He just wants to go home.

Because hoping hurts.
So when a battle ends and an unfamiliar man steps into the kitchen, grinning at him like he’s not just another piece of plunder, Grian doesn’t know how to react. And when he’s led onto the deck to meet the pirate captain — the man who now holds his fate in his hands — he braces himself for another cage. Instead, a dangerous flicker of something he told himself he’d never feel again rears its head for the first time in years.

It's the easiest thing Grace has done all month. He signs his name on the underlined space, returns the clipboard to the man, and waits as the employee leaves to prepare for ‘dumb as a rock’ Pomeranian's departure.
When he gets to the front desk to pay for the adoption fees, the young woman manning the station smiles extra-wide for him. “Thanks for adopting him. He's been on his own here for far too long. I'm glad to see him finally going to his forever home. What will you name him?”
Grace glances down at the dog carrier he holds in his hand. After the Pomeranian's last failed adoption, they decided to keep him unnamed. Calling him by his old name kept sending the poor guy into a spiral, looking for his old human that used to call him by it.
He thinks about it for a moment. Then, a smile comes to him unbidden as an ironic joke comes to mind. “Rocky.”

Simon thought he'd died. He remembered releasing that stupid black box, he remembered the blood and pain, he remembered Ellie's teeth cracking down on SM-13.
Then he woke up, floating in that hateful submarine, in a pool of blood. Intact. Had that all been some terrible nightmare? Had he failed and was now doomed to die slowly in a portion of the ocean of blood?
Then the speaker that shouldn't be working cracked to life.

Grace was content with how his life was going. Sure, he was light years away from Earth and all the other humans. But he was alive, he had a best friend and a whole planet that cared for his happiness and well-being. He got to teach once more and had a beautiful view that was created just for him.
But he was lonely. He had Rocky and the other Eridians of course, but he could really do with a cat or something to cuddle and love. Not that anything like that was going to happen -

"So he's really paralyzed?" Simon asks.
"Oh? Uh, yeah." Grace turns back to Rocky's sleeping form and gestures broadly at him.
Rocky is curled at the bottom of his tunnel, legs at his sides, body resting on the ground.
Simon nods, looking uncomfortable. "So he won't interrupt."
"Nah, he can't, he's– huh?" Grace fumbles for his glasses in earnest now. His heart rate picks up, but he's sort of hoping he's wildly misinterpreting what he just heard.
"Sit back down." Simon growls as Grace goes to stand up.
Slowly, Grace sits back down on the floor. He looks Simon over again and realizes, with a panicked flutter in his stomach that quickly spreads through his limbs like ice water, that Simon is holding a razor blade.

Grace & Rocky decide to go check out an SOS call. It could have gone better. (Trust me, eventual codependent friendship all around.)

There is a realm spawned between two people, these soulmates. The resulting soul realm allows them to meet but only in the restfulness of sleep. These realms are very theoretical and unfathomable to science. They connect people from across the planet, though fiction has long obsessed over the idea of intergalactic or even multiversal connection. There was no scientific basis for the theory so it was left solely as fiction. Except, as two men would find out, it was not so fictious.

Simon and Grace are soulmates, and they've known each other through dreams. Their lives happen, and their lives change (For the worse). Still, both hold on to the hope they'll meet in person.
