Summary
Nicholas D. Wolfwood is hardly what one would call a connoisseur of literature. As far as he’s concerned, it sorts itself nicely into three buckets: smart books, scripture, and drivel. He avoids the first on principle, finds himself unwillingly dragged through the second more often than not, and dabbles in the third if the fancy strikes.
The book that’s caught his eye presents a conundrum he wasn’t prepared to confront at 10 AM on a bright, already-roasting Tuesday morning. He’s been left unsupervised in a general store while Vash takes care of some do-gooder something or other, and his boredom had him gravitating to the rack of double-dime novels tucked in the back corner. The drivel selection is top-tier. Most of the books he can open at random and land on something both intriguingly salacious and horrendously written, and Wolfwood has spent a solid fifteen minutes gleefully paging through paperbacks with covers featuring washboard abs and heaving bosoms before he spots the book that’s going to ruin his life.

When Nicholas D. Wolfwood finds a curious advert in the newspaper, he packs his suitcase and his cat, and leaves for the seaside in hope of peace and quiet—unaware the little cabin on the beach is already inhabited by a creature beyond his worst nightmares.

Summary
At an overnight stop in the saloon of a nowhere town, wanted outlaw Vash the Stampede runs into an old friend in need of help. His friend, Marta, left the safety of Ship Three over a decade ago and has since moved to her wife's hometown and started a family. However, the town sits atop a large freshwater aquifer, one of only a few in No Man's Land, and a group of water barons in a nearby city have set their sights on it. With hired guns harassing the town and legal options running out, the threat violence will be brought down on this town like a boot on a throat grows every day.
Nicholas D. Wolfwood knows Vash will run headlong into the brewing fight, and he also knows he'll follow Vash into it. He knows Vash will trust Nicholas to guard his back. Like Nicholas is someone worth trusting. He'll follow Vash anywhere, even to his end.

“Lemme make this clearer for you: I am not opposed to foolin’ around. In fact, I am even inclined to say that I want to. And if you agree, ya need to say yes. I’m not playin’ any of that hard to get bullshit. We’re either fuckin’ or not,” Wolfwood says, crude.
Nick is still looking away from Wolfwood as he mumbles something.
“Ya better look at me when ya speak, Nicky D,” Wolfwood demands.
Nick looks up at him with a scowl. “Fine. Yes, I wanna‘fool around.’ God, you’re worse than Blondie,” he growls. Wolfwood smiles.
“Good. Now that wasn’t so hard, was it?”
Nick sticks his tongue out at him. Wolfwood’s face falls.
“Lord, give me strength…” he mutters before leaning down to kiss him.
