    Ilya blinked back a tear, “I missed you. Since you- took your vows. It’s been hard. You ignored my texts last year. After the ordination, when Scott Hunter-.”

    “I- there was nothing I could say, Ilya. Scott Hunter didn’t change-“

    “But maybe things are different now. Or will be.” Ilya insisted. “With Scott maybe things will change and we could... And you- you don’t have to do this anymore.”

    Or; Ilya and Shane met at boarding school over a decade ago. Their lives took vastly different paths. Ilya is now a professional athlete for the MLH. Shane pursued the priesthood. Despite their differences, they always had each other. After twelve years of friendship and one long year of silence, the men reunite and are forced to confess out loud what has lingered between them for years.

    Ilya stared at the message. Rage swirled in his stomach - that Shane would run out on him like that, spend the next two months shoving his fucking girlfriend in Ilya’s face, and then text him like none of that had happened. Like none of it mattered.

    Mixed in with the anger, though, and threatening to overwhelm it, was the hot burn of shame. Because Ilya was already texting back okay and putting on his shoes. Because he was fucking pathetic, and couldn’t resist.
