“That’s not it. I don’t take handouts. What I’m asking for is a job.”
Veruca raises an eyebrow. “A job?” she says flatly. “You want a job in my fathers company.”
“Yes. We don’t have the money to send me to college and minimum wage jobs won't cut it, so I thought,” she trails off and backs away. “Look, I need a hand. I used the last of my own money to get here and without it I’m not going anywhere.”
“You’d be stuck in England,” Veruca says, letting out a breath. Violet, though incredibly different at first glance, is still the little girl chasing after what she desires. This is her new record, though it's not a record at all. “It will be hard to convince my father. He doesn’t like it when I ask him for things.” Violet chuckles at that but quiets down once she realizes Veruca is serious. “But I’ll help you as best as I can.”
Reinvigorated, Violet straightens up. “That’s all I ask. Thanks.”
Despite herself, Veruca smiles so hard it hurts and she pats Violet’s hand, lingering a little longer than she should.

Years after the factory tour, Veruca and Violet reconnect when Violet needs some financial help. As they temporarily live under the same roof they begin to grow closer.

Summary
Casey lets himself drift off into the crowd. He knows this rooftop and the ones around it. He remembers arguing with Mikey about comics over there, shoving Raph around near the neon sign for a 7/11, and once they’d been staking out on a rooftop three down for a while and he’d managed to beat April in uno. Which is crazy cause she’s, like, a sort of psychic. There’s a messed up bit of graffiti that he’d done on his own a few nights ago.
Leo would say that the roofs hold memories, that they’re a way to tap into the past or something, but Casey thinks all that spiritual stuff is bull. He just remembers.

Most of Casey's high school career so far has been spent fighting bad guys. That's great and all - really he prefers it that way - but sometimes he needs to remember what it's like to be a teenager. If he can manage to do that. (spoiler alert: he can't)

Summary
He stares at Veruca for a second. She nods towards the door and waves him away but he doesn’t move. With a sigh Mike bends down to pick up the scissors. Finally his eyes stop moving but they don’t meet Veruca’s as he looks up. It’s more like he’s studying her forehead. “I could do it.” Veruca doesn’t answer. Mike doesn’t say anything else.
“Why?” she finally asks. Mike’s body seems to crumple. She wants to rest a hand on his shoulder and maybe get him back to being overconfident but he’d most definitely either slap her or yell, so she keeps her hands where they are.

Veruca Salt is proud of her hair because she's always been told to be. Veruca Salt has also just had her life turned upside down, so maybe she'd like a little less weight on her shoulders (literally).

“And what do you want?” She asks him out of the blue.
“Me?” He responds, surprised.
“Yes you silly. I said I was getting one for each of us, right?”
Charlie opens his mouth, then shuts it. She had? “I don’t- please don't, Veruca. Just buy yourself two. I don’t need one.”
“Nonsense, you’re my friend and I want to pay for yours. It’s not fair if we have all the fun and you don’t.”
“I’m having fun!” Charlie argues, raising his voice slightly to his own surprise. He’s never liked yelling.
Veruca doesn’t flinch. “Well I wouldn’t be if I were you.” She turns back towards the guy at the counter. “He’ll have-”
She’s just going to ignore him? She’s just going to- a yell slips past his lips “I don’t want anything!” Heads turn towards him, surprise echoing on each person's face. The sounds of the fair still sing on behind him but his friends stand absolutely silent. Any of their laughter has disappeared. Without it Charlie can feel the emptiness of the day sinking in and he cringes, drawing himself backwards. Why did he go at all?

Summary
It’s the perfect combination for his worst feelings. So of course he ends up thinking about Will and El. He’s always thinking about them. Somehow the two of them not being here makes them more important to Mike’s subconscious than if they were standing right in front of him.
He’s already written a letter back to El - he’d done it at the breakfast table the other morning, mind still fogged up by sleep - so his job there is done. But Will…it’s not that Mike doesn’t want to talk to Will, of course he does! They’ve talked on the phone a few times, and even though it’s quiet and awkward and so the opposite of what Mike wants, but he still calls. It’s just that the line is always busy and contrary to popular belief (Max) he can actually stop complaining and do something about his problems. He can’t call Will? Fine, he’ll write instead.

Or, Mike's been trying to write Will a letter. He's been failing to write Will a letter. Nancy steps in to give him some vague advice he might just listen to.

Summary
Ten years later, Nakamura shows up to the high school reunion looking unfairly good and wearing a wedding ring. He tells Hirose, calmly, like it costs him nothing now, that he used to be hopelessly in love with him back then — and Hirose realizes, far too late, that he never noticed at all.
Except the ring isn't what it looks like, and neither is "too late."

Summary
Nakamura loved two things:
1. Icchan, his red octopus: compulsive aquarium rearranger, LEGO collector, and quite possibly the first cephalopod in recorded history to moonlight as a therapist. He listened to every one of Nakamura's rambles about the light-haired boy without a single flicker of judgment. An excellent quality in a confidant.
2. Hirose, who carried a laugh Nakamura had memorised like a song — warm, funny, and entirely unaware that Nakamura found something to fall for in even the way Hirose breathed.The two of them were the axis his world turned on.
Then Icchan gets sick.
Nakamura starts losing sleep, skipping meals, researching symptoms until his fingers ache, slowly sinking while he tries to keep the axis in place. And because the universe clearly has an outstanding score to settle with him — this is exactly when Hirose decides to start paying attention. Now Nakamura has to keep Icchan alive, keep himself upright, and figure out what to do with the boy of his dreams offering to help for the very first time.
Hirose, for his part, only wanted to help. He hadn't expected to learn how to care for a sick octopus — nor to realise he might be taking care of two things at once.
