Summary
The sound was so close to his ear that Thor startled to his feet instantly, his eyes widening in disbelief. "Loki?" he breathed, scanning his room desperately.
Nothing but silence greeted his ears. Thor swallowed, clenching his fists. He could have sworn that he heard his brother's mocking drawl, it had been as clear as day, but -
"Loki if this is one of your games, I will not play it." The god of thunder growled, his brows furrowing.
Still, nothing but silence echoed loudly in the room.
"Loki stop it," Thor whispered, his voice breaking slightly, "Please. Don't play with me like this. It's not funny."
When nothing answered him, Thor stumbled backwards and collapsed onto his bed, smothering his face with his hands, his fingers digging into the side of his head.
A hallucination, he thought morosely, he was thinking of what his brother would say if he were here and his mind had supplied him with the voice.
That was all.

This wasn't the first time Clint's hearing aid batteries died on a mission. But Clint couldn't let that get in the way now. This mission was different. And Clint knew what an honour it was to be part of it. He wasn't going to let something as small as not being able to hear get in the way.

Summary
The battle between Earth and Asgard had been going on for years, now.
With Thor by their side, the Avengers had held their ground against Odin's relentless efforts to take over their realm; batallions of Einherji had failed to make a dent in their defenses, and Tony was liking their odds of showing the would-be conqueror just how tenacious mortals could be.
At least, he liked them, until the new guy showed up.
Loki, Thor called him, but that was most of what he could tell them, was powerful, sly, and clearly determined to mess with them. He was a chaotic, mischievious little bastard, and for the love of science, Tony couldn't understand why Odin's supposedly most loyal servant wasn't making use of his skills to turn the tide his master's way...
