Sixteen-year-old Avery Hastings has a relatively normal life: learning to drive, trying his best not to fail algebra, and helping his best friend Derek Hutchins–the human Vessel of an eldritch entity known as the King in Yellow–stay safe from secret government agents who want to find him after their breakneck escape from the Department of Metaphysical Sciences nearly six months ago. It’s a pattern Derek has been living for a long time. As the lighthouse keeper, part of his role is to be the voice over the radio, telling the fire lookout everything they need to know. He’s gotten used to the pattern. First meetings, last meetings, repeat.
With a new season starting, he doesn’t see why anything will change.

Avery has taken a job as a Fire Lookout during wildfire season on a nice, secluded island, and it's great! Friendly people, stunning nature, a colleague who works in the lighthouse who clearly cares enough to talk Avery through the first night on the job-
It's pretty great, if you look past The Horrors.
Unfortunately, said Horrors are quite persistent.

Ze doesn't know if time passes. The intrusion abates ever so slightly. He can't feel his legs, or arms, or torso, or fingers. He cries into the void for a time that feels like eternity. His voice echoes, echoes, echoes in his head, a single question:
"WHERE IS THE DOOR?!"
There is none.
There's only "here", and it's been this way forever.
Maybe he deserves this.
