Akechi’s birthday was going to be special. He was turning nineteen this year. He’s an adult now. A full grown man. He’s one year older than he should be. He should have died at eighteen years old, body discarded in a world different from their own. He wasn’t even something close to a hero, at least he doesn’t think so. He sacrificed himself for others, but martyrdom was never really his style.
One birthday, separated by ten years.

“Don’t worry.” Joker’s eyes dance with mirth. “I’m playing to win. I just know my own luck.” His tongue darts out to wet his bottom lip, and Goro follows the motion involuntarily. “And yours.”
Eyes narrowing, Goro slips his finger into the trigger guard. “Well, then let’s test that.”
Before Joker can fire back another irreverent remark, Goro compresses the trigger.

Summary
After a falling out with his parents regarding his future, Ren Amamiya enrolls in a culinary arts academy in the United States.
There, miles across the sea, he has a chance encounter with Goro Akechi, who’d left him with a single glove and the memory of a bitterly cold winter evening.
…He also learns that Akechi really can’t cook to save his life, nor can he afford takeout at the moment.
Ren, eager to prove himself beyond curry and coffee, needs a harsh critic in order to hone his culinary skills. Someone who won’t just nod politely and choke down whatever’s on the plate.
So, they strike up another deal.
Ren will prepare a new dish each time they meet. Akechi will taste it, and give his verdict.
If Ren can get Akechi to rank any meal an honest ten out of ten, then that means he’s succeeded.It’s a simple deal. And nothing could possibly complicate things.

It's nothing special; it’s white and plain, the sort of button down that every twenty-year-old guy has stuffed in the back of his closet. The light fabric hangs awkwardly on Goro’s slim shoulders—and, for whatever reason, he has it buttoned all the way up to the top.
The shirt doesn't look bad, but it looks like it belongs to another man. Akira takes a moment to swallow those implications lest he choke on them.
It's impossible not to fall in love with Goro Akechi, he thinks again, sheepish.
(Or: Goro borrows a shirt—then a hoodie. Then another shirt. Then... things spiral out of control.)
