Summary
His jaw is slack, but his eyes are intent. He is tracking every movement Zanka makes, but not in the malicious way his classmates used to. He isn’t waiting for Zanka to mess up; he is trying to observe, to absorb exactly what it is that makes Zanka special. But Zanka doesn’t know this. Zanka only sees something raw, something personal, something so different from what Follo usually looks like. It is not hungry but it is wanting.
It surprises him that something lurks beneath Follo’s easy smiles, his care and kindness. Maybe Zanka just doesn’t pay enough attention, and that irks him. A lot. Because Nijikus should be observant, Nijikus should be careful. And Cleaners should care.
There Follo is, watching Zanka like he has something to learn from him. Perhaps Zanka has something to learn from Follo.

Both of his hands suddenly tighten around his ankle, pulling it in the opposite direction where it twisted.
There's a sickening popping noise that rings out, and following after is an even more sickening muffled scream.

Summary
Zanka has qualms about wearing the earrings provided in his cleaner uniform. Hell, he doesn’t even have pierced ears to begin with. He figures he’ll let them catch dust in a box…
Riyo is not about to let that slide.
OR, dipping my toe into Zanka’s character and the values he places on uniforms, accessories, and overall presentation of himself in his transition from Hell Guard trainee to cleaner.

Summary
His observations passed over Enjin and Riyou frequently, but he scrutinized them far less than anyone else. They were the ones who believed in him, who gave him the courage to climb out of the dank well he planned to rot away in. Trust came naturally between the trio, and Zanka understood that Enjin had known Riyou for far longer than he had. It made sense if they seemed closer to each other than they were to him. Zanka was nothing but logical. He knew better than to be jealous of such foolish things.
And then he stumbled upon Enjin braiding Riyou’s hair.
Zanka, the new guy, didn't get special displays of affection yet. He understood that perfectly. And that was fine, obviously. He didn't need special displays of affections, like hair braiding and head pats and stupid, warm embraces.

Or, Zanka is new to the Cleaners and can't help but notice the way Enjin treats him differently than Riyou.
