    Velvet knows that she's a copy. It's impossible for her not to. After all, she put this headset on once before a few years ago, and she can see the results of that bad decision staring her right in the face. And it looks like no one's bothered to let that version of her know she's a girl, so of course it's Velvet's job to get this closet-case to open up.
    Too bad she's also, really, really annoying.

    Months after giving up all hope on them, Pomni enters the pillow fort to find... Jax.

    But not the one she remembers. A new one. One with softer eyes, happier features and a big red bow on one ear.

    Jax has to figure out what the fuck to do. Because they are a girl now. And weirdly okay about it.

    Also: Jax has her egg cracked by God and has to find a way to cope after being abstracted for months.

    Summary

    “Wretch,” I cried, “thy god hath lent thee—by these angels he hath sent thee
    Respite—respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore;
    Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!”
    Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”

    ~~~
    Dear Jax,
    Why do I begin all these letters with "dear Jax?" You weren't dear to me at all! You were an insufferable, insensitive, unlikeable, violent jackass who had absolutely no interest in changing. But I guess part of me assumed you'd give it up some day and get better. I don't know why, but the idea of you not getting a happy ending never felt real until you were already gone.
    . . .
    Or, Jax's abstraction hits Zooble a lot harder than they were expecting. They don't know how to explain this, not even to themself. At Kinger's suggestion, they attempt to anyway--through letters. They think it's stupid and pointless, but something makes them keep writing anyway.
    Summary
    He's... trying to be better. For his own sake, really, not anyone else's. He just doesn't want to get arrested for assault. He really, really has no reason to still be talking to these people. It's probably best if he doesn't. He's really bad at doing what's best.
    Obviously. He's living in an abandoned building off $15 a week when he has a perfectly fine mother who is perfectly willing to house him.
    But, honestly, that's not bad. He could be doing so much worse. One might consider this rock bottom, but beneath rock bottom is a whole lot of lava, and he's not there.
    [ Jax experiences relative rock bottom for two weeks straight and learns not very much. ]
    That doesn't mean unchanging.
    Or: Returning to a life you thought you left behind forever, what happens when your survival depends on your mental stability and one very determined jester, and does gender even matter when you're not a real person?
